An elderly neighbour is retiring from driving (he's 82) and is selling his Peugeot 205 GRD that he's owned from new. It's F reg, immaculate both inside and out in gleeming post box red and has only done 70K. It's got FSH, most of it from Peugeot. Recent cambelt fitted.
I've offered to buy it as a cheap runabout. I took it out for a spin and it reminded me of one we had new back in 1986. I had forgotten how good these 205 diesels were, it could still show modern superminis a trick or two.
The problem is what price to offer. A car of this age doesn't have any value as such, it's only worth what someone is prepared to pay. But I don't want to rip him off, he's a pensioner and neighbour.
I was thinking of offering £500 seeing as it's in good condition. Do you think this is fair or am I being a bit tight and should offer more?

Sounds fair. Maybe a tad more if you can stretch to it.

Someone on another board bought one of these in much the same condition for £350 recently, so I don't think that £500 is tight in the least.
Of course, if it salves your conscience, you should offer whatever you feel you're prepared to pay, but if I had a relative in his situation, I'd be very pleased with an offer of £500.

I think there is still a market for these, especially with low mileage, history and condition as you say. Even if you pay a bit more than £500, any extra is still peanuts, and after a few shots of diesel conditioner you should have a brilliant little car.

I got £500 part-ex for my 205 after a lot of haggling, it had done about 30k despite the milometer broke! it was a 1.1 style 1992 N.I registered.

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

I've offered him £550 since it's got best part of a tank of diesel in it. He's very happy and so am I.
Car drives like new and will have a nice barn to sit in, next to my Megane and Dauphine.
Looking forward to doing some home repairs on an old car. I lifted the bonnet on my Megane dCi the other day and decided the best thing to do was to close it again. Too complex for home tinkering.
