When to Buy? - Rudedog
I want to buy a new car for the first time..

When is the best time of year to buy it (possible discount from dealer)?

The model I want is about to be changed (VW Polo), is it best to wait a few months after launch in case there are any teething problems before buying?

I'm in no rush to have the new model as it comes out.

Depends on UK dealer stocks of the old model. I don't know what they are. If dealers are overstocked then pre-facelift Polos will be cheap. If they aren't, then there won't be any anyway. Watch the news for broker announcements of cheap new cars. Plenty of current shape Clios around, for example.

My Dad used to buy his cars end of January. Dealers were often prepared to do a good deal to meet their monthly targets, particularly as in January the weather's cold and people are recovering from Christmas/New Year credit card bills. Last thing on many peoples' minds is changing their car.

Me? Didn't rub off I'm afraid. I buy a car on impulse. Probably why I'm skint.

In the case of new cars, I would have thought that Jan was a bad time to buy, as dealers go all out at the end of the yaer to boost their cars-sold target with the manufacturer, and hence can sometimes give virtually no-profit deals, as they get their money back in the form of a 'rebate' from the manuf.

I was thinking about the start of the summer, probably around March. After March you'll get new plates, but just before you may get more discount (I'm not certain about more discount though).

The main reason though is that I'd be able to run it in during the warmer weather. My logic is that it would be more gentle to the car during the first few miles. I don't know whether it would really make any difference though, because the winter will eventually come.

I would expect that the cheapest time to buy might be just Xmas. People usually don't have much money because they've spent it all on presents etc. That's just a guess though.

You may well get a good deal towards the end of this month, as the dealers are having a hard time now due to the tightening of purse strings in a lot of the UK. (introductory mortgage deal rates ending... mass redundancies... etc etc).

Ask, haggle, don't talk of trade in, and then try somewhere else.

You're in the driving seat - they need your money.
