Did anyone see the accident near Tolworth? Looked like some sort of 4x4 had rolled, it was laying on the banking upside down. Had the air ambulance out.
Traffic backed up for miles and miles, luckily I was heading back to Weybridge!

local press report today on the accident includes:
"62 year old man.... with broken arm and suspected several broken ribs. His injuries were not thought to be life threatening."

In case non residents are wondering, this is a 50 limit with a gauntlet of Gatsos. However, every regular user of the road knows where the Gatsos are, so traffic tends to speed up between them then brake heavily.

Why is this part of the A3 down to 50mph? When I used to work in SW London, it was 70 all the way through to ?IIRC Bushey Park. Now there is more traffic and speeds are reduced during the bsuiest times of day due to the volume, why has the limit been lowered?

To update you. There have been three fatal accidents in the last six months. Plus a van on its roof last month.
There are lots of access and exit points and traffic is quite busy with tail backs for exits adding to the mix. The section from the Tolworth underpass to the Hook underpass is far from straight and the lanes are narrow.
I would not like to see it back to 70mph. The current limits are frequently ignored.
I would not be surprised if a 40 limit was imposed on the southern part.

Except for one site going south where the Gatso was damaged and then removed but the lines on the road are still there. regulars still speed there but strangers hit the brakes complicating the flow pattern.

indeed run this road at leats once a week, and know Gatso locations by heart (including the missing southbound one!)
Why 50? the lanes are narrow, its very busy, has a lot of exits / entries and a fairly bad accident rate.
a Limtit I support (tho being a local break with umpunity)

The 50 limit has been up for at least 10 years.

Ah, I used it in the 1980's when there was not so much traffic but people still whizzed down the sliproads to join, maybe they took more care 20 to 30 years ago than people do now? I never saw an accident on this stretch in the 13 months I used it.
