An interesting read, perhaps for the wrong reasons.

Wonder if this will affect Jaguar and Land Rover.

Or whether as rumoured it will sell Volvo Cars to Renault, with whom Volvo has an established long term working relationship. Common sense says "I doubt it" as in relative terms Volvo Cars has been somewhat of a cash cow to the Ford group, but if times are tight...

I beleive GM has now done a deal with the unions on healthcare/pensions which will save them a lot of money. Chrysler are now going down the same route, and Ford will follow. The effect for Chrysler and Ford is not going to be as great as it was for GM because GM have a higher pensioner/employee ratio, but I am sure it will return Ford to profit.

What is the point of a healthcare and pensions requirement that cripples a company to the extent it cannot operate its heathcare or pensions scheme anyway?

Quite. Who would want to be a Rover pensioner now (unless you are a Phoenix of course!)

Employer healthcare schemes are the backbone of US healthcare provision - about 2/3 of working Americans are insured through their employers. The rest are on their own. The snag is that US healthcare is staggeringly expensive by European standards (as anyone who has used a doctor or dentist in the US will know!). I remember reading that it costs about 16x as much, per person, as in the UK. Because the healthcare costs have been rising much faster than inflation this has had a serious knock-on effect on employers - many of whom are locked into agreements with their employees.
The reduction in benefits agreed by GM (and which no doubt will also be visited on Ford employees) will have a big impact of present and former employees, and their dependents.

Also that Ford(us)and GM plans are about 4 times as generous as any other employer.
