I came across this forum and looks quite helpful and informative.
I'm having a problem with a Vw dealership from which I bought my car. I have recently moved home and started taking the car to another dealership closer to home.
Last time I took it in I had a problem with my central locking and the car is still under warranty. I informed them of this fact and they said they would repair it. Once repaired they presented me with a bill for over £300 which I told them I was not paying due the car being under warranty. They then said they would contact the branch I bought the car from and ask why the warranty was not loaded on the system. I took the car home meantime.
I did not hear from them for about 2 weeks. Suddenly I get a call from the branch that repaired my car and they said the other branch was not paying for the repairs so I had to. A few call to the original branch and the sales manager said I should have taken the car to them becuase they are not willing to pay London's inflated labour rates. I disputed this on the grounds that the when I bought the car the salesman had categorically stated that I could take the car anywhere in the country as long as it was a VW dealership to fix any repairs under warranty.
Eventaully the caved in and paid for the repairs. The problem is now I have another issue that needs resolving under warranty and I'm expecting the same trouble.
Please could someone confirm that the second-hand car warranties given out by VW should be nationwide and not tied to a specific dealership.

what and how old is the car ?
what warranty paperwork do you have ?

I thought warranty work was paid for by the manufacturer? I've been told in the past that the dealer bills the manufacturer.
Is your car older than the normal warranty but was offered one by the supplying dealer? Perhaps that's the difference. Maybe you should call VW Customer Care to see what they say?
One thing is certain, the dealer that did the work should not have gone ahead without your permission as you had put the car in for warranty work.

The Ford 3 year warranty is 1 year manufacturer and 2 year dealer, sounds like VW is the same, however you can genuinely take a Ford to any Ford dealer, I have had minor warranty work carried out at two dealers, neither of whom supplied the car.

This is the sort of thing I was talking about in my thread a couple of days ago entitled "what irritates me about dealers."
I wasn't aware VW had gone down this route but a lot of other manufacturers have. This makes warranty claims a lot more of a nightmare if your car isn't 'local'.
I would say it is part of an overall trend to reign in the willingness to repair stuff under warranty, if my recent experience at our local Ford dealer is anything to go by.
I always thought that the dealer did the investigation/work and claimed it back from the manufacturer, how will this work if in year 2+3 the dealer has to foot the bill ? They could be 10's of thousands out of pocket, no wonder they are reluctant.

VAG is 2 year manufacturer followed by 1 year dealer. But Stel's situation reads like standard sale and supply of goods fault rectification work rather than warranty work.

I think we need some more details here - Stel is talking about a used car, and there no indication of the type of warranty. Was the car a VW 'approved' (or whatever they call it) used car? If the car's over 3 yrs old then the warranty is likely to be limited to major faults.
He's also mixing (as many people do) terms like 'VW', 'branch' and 'dealership' as if they mean the same thing.

When I got repairs done on my VWs when under 3 year old I always made sure that it was being covered under warranty before taking them in.
Never had problems that way.Even after 3 year old I got substantial discounts on repairs, arising from earlier problems, by asking first.Albeit with a degree of assertiveness.

Perhaps Ford is the same, 2 year manufacturer followed by 1 year dealer, either way I never had any problms re the dealer element.

The car is a 2000 model and is second hand. The warranty is a VW approved 1 year warranty and the car was bought from a VW dealership.
As far as I know any car that is bought from a manufacturers dealership comes with a 1 year warranty and this is obviously limited to non wear and tear faults.
I got my car back yesterday and it seems like they did the work under warranty which is good but I did have a problem the last time I took it in to fix the central locking and it took me over two weeks to get them to sort it out between themselves, which they eventually did.
I did not mention dealership, VW and what not as if they mean the same thing but they are intricatley linked together as a business process and in my opinion they should work like one.
What's the point of getting a VW approved warranty is it's got nothing to do with the manufacturer, then they may as well call it a dealership approved warranty and not use any catchy words to mislead the customer into thinking that the manufacturer will pick up the bill for faults on the vehicle repaired under warranty.

thats why it is called a "vw approved" and not a "vw warranty". all it means is that vw have looked at the terms & conditions of the warranty and aprroved that it meets their standards.
a bit like the "royal crown derby" bone-china company who have a "royal seal of approval".
actually your experience has been good in that the work has been paid for. the more common experience is where the warranty supplier tries to get out of paying by claiming that the defect does not qualify for warranty work.

Really? This car is 5 year old and came with one years warranty. Very unusual I'd say.

The VW approved warrenty is an insurance backed scheme which covers certain risks depending on mileage. There is another warrenty with VW approved cars that covers nearly everything for the first month/1000 miles (even if you don't like the car IIRC). If the warrenty work was covered by the former, then the fixing dealer (I guess) would deal with the insurer. For the latter, it is at the supplying dealers discression.
I know when I needed some work doing under the intial 1 month portion of the used warrenty, the supplying dealer had to give permission to my local dealer to fix the fault.
