Apologies for a long gap in new road tests, and I know most Backroomers do not pass the homepage, but there is now a new road test of the latest L200 'Triton' pick-up truck. You still don't need to go via the homepage if you click on this: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=199

Is there no way to see any larger pictures HJ?
From what I can see it looks like a very nice truck.

It looks like someone cut the front off a new BMW 5 series and stuck it on a hay cart.

And you went all the way to Thailand to test it for us. Such dedication... :-)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that but - jings - that is one ugly cart. Thought the Ford Super Chief was the result of a battering with an ugly stick, but that is just, well not my cup of tea.
I suppose at least it hasn't gone the Nissan route of building everything with a ruler and throwing away the idea of curves, but someone in this market surely has to design something interesting.

Uggh.
Looks a lot better with single cab than double cab - less likely to break its back (at least that what it looks like to me). The interior is very plasticky and the radio looks like it was teleportedin from the 1990s

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
|
I quite like the look of it in some angles but the profile is simply terrible; There's no coherence between the cab and the loadbay - looks like a cut'n'shut job. Which will be further accentuated when a hardtop is fitted, as many L200s probably will have.

Horrible looking thing. No doubt it will appear to certain types of personality (shaved head, tatoo, McDonald's physique, earing & gold chain, Alsation dog on long leash).

Must be finished in black too!

No - I have two vicious Cavs. With tartan leads.

The Triton 'mega cab' I tested works out at £10,400 in Thailand. When half the other vehicles on the road are pick-ups it makes sense to drive one yourself. Since they don't have the Navara in Thailand, the Triton would be top of my list. Not many ladderframe chassis 4x4s drive as well as it did.

Nice one, HJ. Don't worry about the uneducated, this is aimed at truck afficianodos not mere car drivers. A truck should look mean and ugly, that's the whole point. Annoying other drivers is part of the fun.
2 days ago I was in Toyota Pampanga (central Philippines)just getting the option list sorting out on a new Toyota Hi-lux (Vigo) and a price for a fully-loaded 3.0 diesel one Mica black and black tiny, natch..). I've been hovering over the choice for some weeks.
Now after reading your write-up I think I'll await the L200 which should be here any time: Filipinos love their trucks and Mitsubishi won't be left out of the new breed I'm sure. I'll get a look at that before committing.

Surprised me that the 140PS belt cam 2.5 was as good as it was. May be no real need to go for the 165PS 3.2. But remember when specifying that they don't ride or handle well on roads on those monster off-road wheels and tyres. May not look as good with the smaller wheels and tyres, but they give you a better drive.
