Could someone please, please explain what HJ means by 'going completely Puerto Banus' - has he been taking lessons from Carcoat Damphands ?
Go on, get out of the car...

Rhyming slang?
For what? Coriolanus?

Bananas. Say it fast.
Might be being thick here, but I don't get it!
Anyone remember "The Friends of the Guinless"? "Ness a Guin" (repeat several times...)
Coat at the ready,

Alternatively: "The Paseo Maritimo is an elegant waterfront promenade which epitomises the Spanish love of evening strolling. The seven kilometres of marble floor runs from Puerto Banus to Banana beach and is a focal point of the modern side of the city."
Maybe HJ could elucidate.

I think HJ means that the top of the range SL65 AMG is for poseurs; just like going to Puerto Banus is done so that people can see you there, not because you have a real reason for being there.
You'll do just as well in the SL350 as you will in the little village 20 miles away with fewer tourists.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

That sounds more plausible than bananas!

I would imagine he means extravagence as per Puerto Banus - home to Gin Palaces on the water and nothing but top end, very expensive, exclusive motors.

The 2002 SL55 was stonking, the new car sounds even better.
I drove an 600SL in '92, one of the first in the country (list price £104k in 1992) 408 bhp, shortly afterwards they renamed it SL600 (in line with the rest of the range) and took off a set of accelerator pumps in the name of emmissions which reduced the V12 to 380 odd bhp. That was an amazing car, great fun with T/C turned off, no ESP then of course, it would be interesting to drive it back to back against a new SL500 and see what 14 years has brought us.

Thanks, Espada III and grnicol. But the SL350 won't really do in PB. Just as the yachts (if you can call them that) get longer and longer as the super-rich try to outdo each other, the cars MUST be the most expensive available. You cough up an extre £50k for the SL65 AMG not because its a better car, but to show everyone else that the extra £50 means nothing to you. Ref Cheddar's post, one of the cafe owners at PB had a black SL600 V12 back in 1998. That's the kind of place it is.

An SL600 in black, that says drug dealers, ganstas and er I guess cafe owners to me. Has to be silver or metallic blue.
I went to PB in I think 97, golf at La Quinta etc, stayed between PB and Marbella though had Marbella in mind when I piled out of a PB bar and got in a taxi, so said Marbella to the driver, must have gone past the hotel, the next thing I knew was wandering around central Marbella just as far from the hotel as I started with no cash.

"But the SL350 won't really do in PB"
Couldn't you just have one without the badges?
Great test, BTW - I'm not normally envious, but for you I'll make an exception...

Not quite the number of flash yachts as PB but I was in Rhodes a few years ago and there were 2 yachts there which had helicopters on the stern which would have cost more than any Merc, except perhaps the Mclaren. Really silly money around for some people, lucky them!
