The government is currently consulting on proposed changes to the Highway Code.
Worth a read.

I've dipped into this and it seems sensible, common sense stuff. But only a tiny insignificant minority know anything about the existing HC so where does that leave the extra rules and regulations? In the abyss of uncaring arrogant ignorance practised by most road users. Horse riders with lights after dark? A limit of 4 mph for electric wheelchairs among pedestrians? The whole thing is a pointless excercise, I'd say.

Last time they reviewed, they drafted a rule about lanes merging on the approach to roadworks - to prevent the current farce where some drivers consider 'correct' behaviour to use both lanes up the obstruction then merge, whilst others get into the (usually) left lane a mile or so beforehand. For those interested, they went for the former, but it didn't make it to the published version.

Thanks Doc. In response to Marlot, this time they do mention merging in turn at low speed. But they do not tell drivers to do it. Quite good that they tell drivers in traffic queues to get off the brakes. The point is that this is a consultation document. If you want to have your say, then have it.

I've re-posted to get Doc's link back on the first page. Though Backroomers may not want to discuss an update of The Highway Code here, I feel sure many of them will want to use Doc's link to find out what changes are proposed.

I cannot believe that no Backroomers are remotely interested in this. Because once the new Highway Code is on sale at the bookshops you'll all be complaining about the changes.

I'm reading it! Cor blimey I've got a wife for nagging me.
It's good, common sense, sadly comon sense is all too rare.

Read through and overall ok with it. Quite a lot of common sense.
Emailed them with two comments.
Would echo HJ's request, here's a chance to have your say, and guaranteed once we're past the consultation date and it's on the shelves, we'll have mutterings about what "they" have done (and no doubt how it's the EU's fault or something).
Participate. If you don't, people like that woman who wants overtaking banned will form the majority of commentators!

I've just looked through it and it receives my seal of approval.

Gard.
it happens. I nearly ran one of these down on a dual carriageway with a 40 mph limit. It was dark and, of course, he had no lights on. It was tit for tat because he'd nearly got me as I walked into the supermarket as he came out. I wondered why he was wearing an old motorcycle helmet.

What a load of cobblers the highway code has become, NO WONDER IT'S HARDLY READ BY ANYONE NOWADAYS!, it really has taken itsself to the nth degree, page upon page of waffling on about the intricacies a road system which has become more of an advanced "It's a knockout" I mean, does it really need a "Diversity Statement?", I think it's time they took a step back and decided whether they want to really keep walking this path, or maybe a simpler, more concise approach is required in conjunction with a less clutterd and simpler road system such as that which existed in the 1970s when a traffic light was a traffic light and a lane was a lane. At the end of the day, it typifies the rediculous regulation that serves little purpose yet seems endemic within British culture.

slightly off subject but basically same thing, filled in a consultation earlier this year in regards to categorised salvage sva"s the vic system q registrations etc and vosa"s role, got the consultation document back from dvla and it was all yes but no but, and we cant comment on that as its vosa"s dept so seeing as all these different agencies are now supposed to be self financing i wouldnt hold my breath that they will agree to disagree on anything if they can have another meeting to agree it or disagree it
sorry.

Is all the stuff highlighted in blue the changed bits? The idea about reminding parents about not letting their kids out unless they understand the green cross code is a good one. It won't help evolution of the brightest much but it will save someone a bit of bonnet paint ;-)
It seems to have got a lot more nannying since I last read it.

>>
teabelly, good point . they don't make it easy, do they?
despite their own clear guidance:

"
2. Be clear about what your proposals are, who may be affected, what questions are being asked and the timescale for responses.
3. Ensure that your consultation is clear, concise and widely accessible. "
