I have been offered a June 2002 VW Passat 2.0 Sport Petrol Estate for £4100. The car has full VW dealer service history, 3 months parts and labour warranty and full HPI report. The only problem is it has 112 000 miles on the clock. Should I invest a 3 hour drive to go and see this vehicle?

It's a fair price for the age and mileage. Make sure the timing belt was replaced recently. And try to check the oil consumption. Valve stem seals can give out.

And check the latch mechanism on all the doors - another weak (and expensive) point on the Passat.

Thanks for the reply HJ. If it was a diesel would I have to look out for the same things?

If it was a diesel it wouldn't be £4100, surely?

On a diesel, timing belt and turbo. But why ask that question if it's a petrol? As Maz wrote if it was a diesel it wouldn't be £4,100.
