HJ,
In this particular case I don't think it was an old show. Last nights episode featured a 54 reg Zafira, which they said was only 10 months old.

Quick question
Do you still wear flairs?

Maybe the costs have been fiddled, but Wrecks to Riches seems alot more realistic than Wheeler Dealer who didn't even factor in labour costs in their project cars. Pretty sure it was taped in 2005 just from various clues throughout the show.
That 106 they fixed just didn't seem right...only 3,000 miles on the clock yet the interior looked worn out, also not so sure about their valuation of £5,000 for a forecourt car of similar spec. Still makes me wish I had the skill and knowledge to repair damaged cars and take advantage of the savings suggested.
|
In the early 1990's I repaired quite a number of lightly-damaged cars for resale (Rovers, Cavaliers, even a Skoda, etc etc). I had a mate who had a very good jig system (a Chief - with lazer aligner) so I could do fast and accurate repairs.
To be honest its hardly worth it now from a commercial point of view. Everybody has anything over about £1k HPI'd - and even if it comes up lightly damaged then they want it half-price. Plus cars have become more complicated - air con condensers are often damaged in light frontal impacts, so that adds £400+ to the repair straight away. Don't even think about the cost to replace Xenons and airbags (whole loom, bag and ECU should be replaced). If you do it properly, you can't make any money.
Older cars with a few light dents or S&R are probably worth it for the DIY'er.

Wasn't the worn out interior caused by joyriders?
Mind you, makes you wonder why the previous owner of the 106 decided to hand paint the dashboard with vinyl paint. Looks like he applied the paint with a stick.

TVM,
I shouldn't encourage you, but why do you ask?

HJ's comment:
"Can be years out of date."
And I had this sudden image of you with "flared jeans or trousers" and a tank top.

Any prospect of HJ-TV anytime soon?

Any prospect of HJ-TV anytime soon?
I hope so.
Maybe his appraisal of cars would be slightly better than the bloke who presents "Gone in 60 Seconds" on Men & Motors.
The last show I saw he was singing the praises about a Y-reg Laguna in gold, saying it was a lovely car and was ideal for the heavily pregnant punter he was buying for.
|
Men & Motors asked years ago, but had no money so the answer was no. Hence the comment "cheap channels". Did a thing called 'Dealers Choice' on ITV2 about 7 years back. Not interested at all now because it's too time consuming and, like Lee Marvin in 'Point Blank', I don't have the time.

My thoughts exactly! I'd be mortified after giving him £5000, to find he'd bought me a 90'000m Laguna. I'd love someone to look at the car he's bought and say 'what a shed!'

If you've seen one you've seen all the programmes - so repetitive it's boring.
Somewhat similar with the Used Cars show with Penny Mallory and the chubby guy, although yesterday's shots of alloy wheels being smartened up were interesting (don't even take the tyre off).
Penny is IIRC a rally bred driver and pretty useful behind a wheel (duel with V B-H might be an idea!), but pretty much plays second fiddle in the show.
