Tried my local Mitsubishi dealer (Hinckley, Leics) to see if they knew anything about HJ's article advising these prices-they did not, nor do Mitsubishi themselves according to the vague reply from their website.
Any one know who is selling Colt Reds at this price?

Yes. The Mitsubishi dealer in Cirencester, wholly owned by Mitsubishi, has them on the verge outside stickered up at £5,995. Even though Colts are good and very practical cars, they are not selling in the required volume throughout Europe and the factory is churning out 200,000 a year. That's why they are being discounted. You may not be able to get exactly the colour and engine and trim you want because to get the discount you will have to buy from stock, but the discounts are there. Just avoid the boring 1.3.

Thanks HJ, off to the Cotswolds it is then- incidently, Hinckley want £6,995 for theirs.

HJ, why is the 1.3 boring?
Actually, my wife and I found the 1.3 engine to be noisy and the semi-auto gearbox was very jerky on the model we tried yesterday.
It is odd that there are no discounts to be had on drivethedeal.com, if they are having a hard time selling them (and I mean absolutely no discount at all, across the range).

Mitsubishi is trying to control the way the cars are sold, keeping the discounts and profits within the dealerships. Fair enough if they can get away with it.
But why ask me WHY the 1.3 is boring when that is exactly what you discovered for yourself?
(The 1.1 is a gutsy little 3-cylinder petrol engine with plenty of character. The 1.5 is a really useful, quite torquey 3-cylinder diesel. in comparision, the 1.3 4-cylinder is plain boring. See www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=167)
The MMT suffers the same problem of all electronically controlled electric clutch manuals posing as automantics. The change from 1st to 2nd requires a perfectly judged lift of the accelerator which most people cannot perfectly judge.

Cheltenham Mitsubishi were also offering the Colt Red at £5999 but are now knocking 06 Reg ones out at £6695.
Reading Mitsubishi have an ad on ebay tinyurl.com/gttlp for the CZ1 (spec is like a red) and you can have that in colours other than red (i.e. black unless you want to pay extra for metalic paint).
I like the Colt its one of the only small cars I'd actually buy, it has its failings but many other much more popular cars are worse.
There will be some good bargains on the second hand market soon, you can already get a nearly new high spec one for £6000, I saw a red version on autotrader that started off at £6000 and was reduced several times until it got to £4500 and sold.

I asked simply to find out if it was because it was noisy, or if it was because of some other characteristic of the engine. I always find noisy engines very tiresome, certainly after a while, but not all of them are boring.
As far as the discounts are concerned, they would help themselves if the web site and/or links to dealers web sites made some mention of it. I registered to be mailed details of offers and have received absolutely nothing.

You can get £6000 new CZ1 3dr Colts at www.oakleymitsubishi.co.uk/29853/oakleymitsubishi....m
If you want metallic paint its £295 extra.

I read in my local paper that the Colt was Northern Ireland's best selling car in February, with 394 sold. Apparently a dealer in Belfast is giving away Caribbean cruises with each car. I can't imagine they're 6K plus cruise though.
