Myself and a few friends are planning on taking a car round the nurburgring in a few months time. I am currently looking at insurance options.

I could just add the car to my normal policy and add my friends as extra drivers. My only problem with this is that if the car is crashed and we need to make a claim, this will be on my insurance record and could potentially make it difficult for me to insure anything for a good number of years, especially if they hit something expensive. While these guys are all very safe drivers, this is a race track and accident do happen.

These guys are unable insure the car on their own insurance as the V5 is in my name. Is there a way to set up group insurance, whereby each driver is risking their own insurance history (no claims bonus)?

That is such total rubbish. I have a CBR1000 owned by someone else, he is abroad, his name is on the V5 and it is registered in his name he isn't insured to ride. Not only that I bought a bike last week, before going to view I insured it in my name so I could test ride it/take it home if I chose. Both bikes are now covered on the same policy with seperate certificates. Bike one costs 10 pounds per annum, the new bike will cost 200 pounds, the interim period was covered by a 25 pound admin charge. One insurance company, one slaesperson (no supervisor) very very simple. Last year I insured another person (FC) to drive my caer in France/Belgium for a tenner. Change insurance companies.

He's right, you know.

However, your difficulty might be that the same vehicle risk (e.g. theft) could be insured multiple times. Whilst there is no law against that, insurers really, really, don't like it given the obvious opportunity for abuse. This frequently ends up under the heading of things they prefer to steer clear of.

How is the car insured at the moment ?

Try www.primoplc.com who might be able to point you in the right direction, if there is one.

Take another car so you can all get back if you wreck the Ring car.

Even if one of you doesn't crash it, you might blow the engine.

Fly to Frankfurt Hahn, hire a car, drive round the ´ring on the hire company´s tyres. Repeat until bald.

I think you will find tht use on the ring is expressly forbidden in the t&c of most german hire companies.

Ive been told (but Im not sure I believe) that avis/hertz will ban you if yo utake their car onto the ring - but how would they know ?

www.dayinsure.com may offer what you are looking for. Whatever the insurance though, unless it is a specific track day insurance for the Nurburgring you will have no cover whatsoever round the 'ring so if one of your friends crunches your car (not an unusual event round it) then I hope they're prepared to get their cheque book out.

The Nurburgring is great but never, ever, take something round it you can't afford to write off.

If you've not used it yet, Ben Lovejoy's website (www.nurburgring.org.uk ) is a useful repository of all things 'ring related including understanding hire companies, and awkward insurance companies, recovery firms etc.

Bear in mind that for Touristenfahrten the 'ring is a public road so third party insurance as a minimum will be required - ISTR that track day cover does not provide this.

Have a great time!

Thanks for your replies. To answer your questions:

The car is currently insured as a second "temporary" car on my normal insurance. These are the same insurers who said no to insuring a car not under my name (my mate uses the same people). You might be right, this may be a issuer specific thing as I had to argue to get the car issued as a second car (they wanted to start a new policy).

The car has been brought especially for this trip, with the mind set that if it breaks it won't be a great loss. However the insurance angle comes from, if the worst happens and we hit someone else, are we covered?

From what I've read, the 'ring is actually a 'districted toll road' rather than a track as normal German road laws apply (no overtaking on the wrong side of the road etc and what the police say goes).

I will look into the one day insurance pieces and also see if I can argue with my friends insurance companies.

Even though the Ring is classed as a toll road by the German authorities there is enough small print in the average UK policy to make a "wrapped it around the Armco at the Carousel" claim rather difficult. One way around it is for instance to take four mates and a 3 grand car and make sure you are all happy to fork out 600 quid if anyone of you stuffs it. Though that does not cover you if you stuff it into the side of someoneelse's £40k M3.

I think the one-day insurance is £10 per day for the 1st two days then £4 per day after with with 20% surcharge for European cover for two drivers. Working on four drivers on a 5-day trip you'd be looking at about £80.

You've certainly taken the right approach on the car - that's how I've done it in the past - all put some cash into a pot and buy a car specific for the purpose. If it gets crunched or expires then so be it or sell it when you get back.

The 'ring is enormous fun - just respect it and be sensible and err on the side of caution and you will have a great time and come back in one peice. Over confidence is the undoing of most people round there.
