- But I´m delighted I finally got to drive one, and thoroughly recommend the experience. Fancy a go in one of those new Cadillacs next time I´m in America.-----
I presume you mean the de Ville touring sedan (DTS)- I can recommend the experience Barchettaman, I hired one in Atlanta last year and took it to New Orleans via Nashville and Memphis ( before the hurricane ).around 300hp Nortstar V8 gives a top speed of around 150mph and 0-60 iirc 5.8 seconds but if you want to cruise the Interstates at 70 its a luxury barge as well.
Absolutely loved it and with 7 days hire just over £200 its a bargain.

I notice that in HJ's deals of the week section (to the right) this week, discounting has started on 300Cs... Chrysler 300C 3.0 V6 CRD Auto £25248 saving £502 Chrysler 300C 5.7 V8 Auto £32275 saving £720 I know it's only £500, but I'm surprised, as there's a long waiting list for diesels at my local dealer. V
It's certainly a funny old world V
My local dealer is now quoting 4-5 months ordering for the 300C CRD and other dealers say that they could sell more but they just can't get hold of them.
However in our society, there is always someone who is prepared to sell something for less. At £25750 the car is absolutely, stunningly good value - the amount of bang for your buck is tremendous, it looks like you are now going to get even more bang for the same buck ! Personally, I would take the £500 (2% discount) and put it towards some goodies for the car (apperently the optional 7 speaker Boston Acoustice system with woofer makes buldings wobble & all for £250). I know of another source who will a little bit more money off for you (National reputable supplier), but I don't know how generous they would be to you on the trade in front (I don't know how generous Drive The Deal is either).
My dealer offered to buy my car back off me this weekend for what I paid for it - 4000 miles on the clock. I thanked him & declined his offer.
Going slightly off topic - I notice that they are knocking 8-15% off BMW 3/5 series & Merc C Class & E Class diesels as well - given that the world and his brother SUPPOSEDLY wants to drive a BMW & Mercedes, are people finally realising how hugely overpriced they are ?

Murph - Are they any good, these Chrysler 300C's?
|
My dear Mr Bill Payer
I could fill this website with all of the reasons why I think that you should sell your children, go down to the Chrysler dealership, order the car and then lock yourself into a darkened room and wait the 4 - 5 months that the waiting time for the CRD currently is.
Is there any particular part of the car that I could help you with ?
I have just come across a side by side road test of the 300C CRD and a Jag XJ-D on a German motoring website. As a straight side by side it went to the 300C, when the MASSIVE price difference went in, it became a no brainer. Did you know that a same specced Jag XJ costs exactly DOUBLE a 300C. & the Chrysler has more interior space & better performance !
The car is a fantastic piece of kit at an absurdly low price. May I humbly suggest that you track down a dealer that has a diesel demo (easier said than done) and try one to see for yourself why I have been driving around with a fixed grin on my face since I got my 300C on Jan 20th / 4000 miles ago.
In my opinion, the car really is that good.

Saw a 300C driving up the M1 two days ago, the first one I've seen on the move rather than just parked up. Must say IMO it was pretty damn impressive to look at, a Hemi in black. Big car, but theres nothing wrong with that, looked solid and had great road presence.
It was being followed by a new 3-series, and it definitely showed up the Beemers' styling for the dogs breakfast that it is (IMHO)!.
;o)
|
Saw one in the flesh today for the first time. Nice silver-ish colour. CRD as I could see from the badge, but the engine sounded sweet and burbly.
Behind it was some class of Merc in a dreary blue. The 300C made the merc look 50 years old.....

It is really hard to write after a nice comment like that without sounding like a smug, gloating clever dick.
But it does make me feel so warm & fuzzy !
I recently went to a meeting and parked next to someone in a brande new E class that had cost him a great deal of money. When we came out of the meeting I had a goodly sized crowd around me and my car, but not one person wanted to know about t'other fellows Merc.
Interestingly, no one had anything but bice thing to say about the 300c, they all got the price wrong by at least 100% and several just could not be persuaded that it wasn't a Bentley.
The joys of motoring.

I'm led to believe that if you actually try and order a 300C CRD on the drivethedeal offer, that actually getting the car for that price may be a touch "difficult" if not impossible.
BUT, if you do manage to get it for the price good on you - I'd just be very, very surprised.

I read the same article and the Chrylser absolutely wiped the floor with the BMW on nearly every aspect ( I think that the Beemer had a nicer handbrake, but), and then it took the Vauxhall Signum and cleaned the toilet with it.

Hi madf
I guess that you won't be buying one then ?
When I got my 300C I was very aware that you either like it (a lot) or really dislike it.
So far it's going about 98% like it, 2% don't. Which for a new car is quite a good balance. So far noone has had no opinion at all.
Taste is a personal thing and one persons like can be anothers dislike, but as for your comment on the subtlety on the designing. I can set your mind at rest. There is absolutley no subtlety in the design at all, whatsover, nada, zilch.
And I absolutely love every part of it's 5 metre length, gargantum interior space and 2 tonne masse.
It may not be your taste (what is your taste by the way ?), but for the first time in over 10 years I'm enjoying my motoring again.

I am sure I would enjoy driving one: if I did not have to park the monster in multistorey carparks where the positions are all too narrow and too short and the corners are too tight to turn without scuffing the bumpers..
I'm too old for conspicuous consumption, hassle when driving on Britain's crowded roads or trying to impress people with the size of my car.
I note the photo was taken in the country and to be fair it looks very good there. So would any car.. even a Rover Citysortofrubbuishcar..
Looks like a tank and in town and carparks -in the UK - would feel like a tank.
Shock and awe yes. Subtle as that campaign.
But each to his or her own...
Now if it was secondhand and £5k I might consider the diesel one. But £20k? The man who designed it (? design ? ) obviously had a troubled childhood and was afraid of the dark:-)

Conspicuos consumption - no way. It costs thousands less than a similar specced 3 series Beemer.
It's great fun driving it in the North Of England.
35 mpg and 42 mpg on a speed limit obeying 100 mile run.
Trying to impress others with the size of my car, nah, just giving me plenty of comfort when i'm driving
I don't think it looks like a tank at all - mabye with the optional gun turret it might.
& it is sooooooooo comfortable to drive.
if your ever up in the Lake District, drop me a line and take Arnie out for a spin.

And you may pick good looking people up from nightclubs at 4.00 in the morning.

As to what the other owners look like, I don't know as in over 4000 miles of motoring, I've not seen another on the roads.
BUT, on an owners T'internet forum that I take part in, I have found the other owners (from around the world) to be very similar to the contributors that come here, i.e regular people who enjoy their motoring. Funnily enough the Americans regularly get complimented on their good attitude and friendly & helpful manner by visitors to the site, which I'm told compares very favourabaly with other sites for prominent American brands (which can be very hostile and unpleasant places to visit).

At £25,750 OTR the 300C CRD with such a comprehensive spec (Merc engine and auto 'box; heated leather elec. adjust seats etc etc) is phenominal value for money and there is nothing comparable on the market for the price. You say you would buy one secondhand for £5K so I have a sneaking suspicion you actually quite like it?

Hi madf
no arguements from me regarding parking spaces ! your Fiests definitley is more car park friendly than Arnie.
I'm not going to pretend that Arnie is a small car , because clearly he is not. I found multi storyes to be bad newsith my last car (Rover Tourer) and the situation has not improved for me on that score. Perhaps with me living in a rural area, it's not as much of an issue for me - if I lived in a city, it would be a different story.
From your original list of cars, I think that the 300C makes a VERY credible alternative, IF you like the looks (which you don't). Pound for pound the 300C knocks seven colours out of the others for value and IN MY OPINION looks absolutely devestating into the bargain.
I notice that you refer to your car as a holigans car ! A few people have called Arnie a Mafia Staff car and a couple have commented on the size of the boot - asking how many bodies are in there !

Hi again 'Madf'..
You are absolutely correct in your observation relevant to the parking aspect. It is obvious that the 300C cannot compete with the Fiesta or any other small car on that score. If that were to be a crucial factor in the purchasing process then the 300C would not be a consideration for me.
Like yourself,I have also owned many large cars throughout my 46 years driving experience from a 1949 Humber Hawk in the early sixties to a Mercedes a couple of years ago
In considering the 300C as my next acquisition I was looking for something unique and being retired, I was not wanting something that was merely practical transport. Enter the 300C....fell for it when I first saw it in the metal and following my test drive I immediately placed my order. Quite simply, the 300C eclipsed any other car that I had ever owned.
I have inherited my daughter's ex studentmobile 11 years old Citroen AX 1.0 litre with 4 speed 'box and you could not get anything more diverse from a 300C than that! I think the AX is a great car and being worth only about £300 I have decided to keep it. It will be used to park at multi-storey / supermarket car parks; transporting garden refuse etc to the tip and for taking a rather scruffy West Highland terrier to and from the beach!

the mesh grille is an addon and can be done either froom the dealer or from a number of American websites.. if you go onto a 300C owners forum, you would find MUCH good natured conversation about which grill sets the 300C off the best. I placed my order for the car on the first day that they took orders for it. It was a case of lust at first sight.
& then I spent a few weeks wondering if I'd acted in haste.
& then I read the HJ roadtest of the CRD

There is one thing that your roadtest missed out, and it would be something that would be difficult for a professional motoring journalist to truthfully get across - and that is the absolute pleasure of ownership that this car gives you.
EVERY single day, a complete stranger (or 2 or 3), stops to chat with me at the shops or in a carpark about my car.
It's a unique (for me) & hugely pleasant experience.

That'll have been the Magnesium Pearlcoat. I've never seen one, but I'd very much like to, to see how it goes with the looks of the car.

The magnesium pearlcoat isn't too bad actually but again its all down to personal preference...as is black!
BTW..Chrysler stateside are discontinuing magnesium pearlcoat from next month. Can only be one reason for that...
Vin...
I have it on good authority that I am to win the National Lottery next week. If it will help I will send you the tenner!

Geordie,

No probs with that one Adam...I did not go for the magnesium pearlcoat.

magnesium pearlcoat is not in your face enough for real chavs:-)
(from observation not personal taste:-)

Good Morning 'Madf'...
Thankfully my 'pension book' status disqualifies me from being a real chav!
My actual colour choice was mineral grey which is actually a rather tasteful dark metallic silver...very restrained and in keeping with my non-bling mode of life.
|
>Geordie
Glad to hear you are not a "bling" sort of person..
But I can see 300Cs in Black with black tinted windows being a fashion accessory in Mosside Manchester, Some parts of London , Nottingham etc..
Not quite the kind of image I think I would want to be associated with.. :-)

Where've you got this idea from Mad that it's a chav car?!
Both times I've seen one been driven have been by non cap wearing, 40+ year olds. One even in a shirt and tie!
|
>Adam
Lots of talk of tarting it up with extras = bling = chavs...
madf
|
What extras? A grille?!
You can buy a chrome grille (from Ford) for a Focus, Mondeo, Galaxy etc. Are these chav?
|
Hi again 'Madf'...
I am in total agreement with your observations and sentiments.
The 300C is a wonderfully engineered car of striking design but sadly on the downside (in my opinion) the 'bling' factor that you describe can be at variance to more conservative tastes.
However, on the upside, that aspect can be addressed when 300C owners of a 'certain age' can present the car in what I think is it's optimum effect by not favouring what now seems to be obligatory black with tinted windows and enormous 'tacky' wheels.
Having said that, the 300C is one of those very rare cars that has the ability to appeal to a large cross section of the motoring public by being liveried as a reserved British executive saloon or a brash American Street Cruiser.
I know which type mine will be!

A man of taste and refinement.
(not many of us left judging by this thread:-))))

me neither madf
which is a bit of a bugg*r when my car is black, with "ahem" tinted windows !!!
People must be a bit different where I'm from (The Lake District), the usual comment I get is "nice car mate, what is it", "it IS a Bentley, isn't it ?" "how much ?, but that's less than a 3 series and they're tiny" "how many bodies ca you get in the boot" etc etc.
I do wear collar & tie when I'm at work and I'm about the least "flash" person that you would ever meet (I had to have chav & bling explained to me).
The thing is madf, I can only judge what other people think about my car, by what they tell me. So far they have been overwhelmingly positive (even the folk who've said, too big for me, but it IS a handsome beast).
But I'll be honest with you, I bought the car for the pleasure that it gives ME, that most other people enjoy it as well warms the soul, but as the old adage goes, you can't please all of the people, all of the time.

Hey there MTC...Good debate is this!
I am aware that you are indeed a thorough English gentleman totally removed from the world of chavs and bling merchants and a jolly nice chap!
IMO it just seems a pity that virtually every potential owner is opting for the 'black with tints, mean and menacing look' and unfortunately it is a fact of life that(like it or not) human nature decrees that we 'pigeon hole' people hence the association with chavs and bling etc.
Just one small point re those that discuss your car livery in endearing terms...are their nice comments perhaps jaundiced by the fact that you are 6ft 3ins tall and built like the proverbial brick s++t house? (LOL)
Regards

Geordie
How kind of you to say old bean.
That people are nice to me because of my size ? what a question.
Because I've always been how I am, I've never given it a thought.
In the past I've had people taking piccies of may car with their phones while i've been in shops, & if I'm parked up in a car park (& away from the car), Arnie always seems to have 2 or 3 people around him having a closer look - so I assume that they are attracted to the look of the car. Even though I am as you describe, I'm not THAT intimidating to look at and if someone thought that Arnie looked pants, I would have thought that at LEAST one person would have said so by now.
& the colour debate goes on ! The car only comes in 5 colours in the UK which is a bit limiting. It would be nice if we could have a few more options like the Americans have - one of them Heritage Red suits the car very well IMO.

please note that this is a limited edition American model, not the UK version

Yup...no doubt new colours will be added in the future(lighter shades of black perhaps?)...great marketing tool of all motor manufacturers along with the inevitable exterior updates and interior tweaks to 'keep the models fresh' as the blerb goes and of course, the sales figures up courtesy of the 'must haves' who must have!
They would all go 'bust' if their customers were like me, who has a personal record of having ran a dog of a Morris Marina from new for 17 years!
You know I think I might go after my own peronal record commencing 12th April!

>>...in the most horrible pale bluey green ever....
The first 300C that I saw in the flesh was that colour too - parked on the 3rd storey of car park near Poole quay. Even parked next to the Landcruiser it still managed to look gargantuan. Certainly wouldn't mind one myself ......
|
Ah Chad.R...yet again another fellow enthusiast who appreciates the distinctive and commanding presence of this great car...which wasn't even in black!

I saw one of these in my street yesterday and I had to slow down and have a look at it. Wow, what a cracker of a car.
However, I was later looking out my window when it drove past and the side profile just didn't look right. Its hard to put into words but it was as if the bonnet and boot should have been bigger than they are to keep it in proportion. If that makes sense?
However, still doesn't stop me wanting one - now!
|
Just for you 'BobbyG'.....
A 6 inch stretched version is due for launch stateside. You have in fact hit on one of the endearing styling features re long bonnet and shorter boot(which is biiiiiggggg!)
Rest assured...the style grows on you (no pun intended).
