Stainless Steel Exhaust-Universal Fit? - handsome
Hey guys,

Just got a question if you could help me out :)

A mate at work is having a garage clearout (garage at home not commercial garage) and as I was helping him I saw a stainless steel back box exhaust. I asked him if he was interested in selling it and he said I colud have it for a fiver. He does not know which car it is for as he bought it from a car boot sale for £20 with the hope of fitting it to his escort, which he never got round to. The guy who sold it at the car boot sale had no idea as to which car it has come from or even which car it fits!
Question is are these exhaust universal fit or not?
All that the box has on it is a sticker which says PECO DTM. It doesnt have any other marking in it.
The exhaust has two tail pipes sticking out and one pipe on the section where it joins on underneath the car.
I want to fit it to my VW Polo 1.4 R reg.

How easy is it to fit this exhaust and will it fit my car?

Thank you guys for reading and I look forward to your answers.

Sorry to be flippant Mike, but "how long is a piece of string"

Some sizes and pipe diameters might go a little (not far, but a little) way to giving somone more informed than I on this forum an idea.

The "Technical matters" forum would be a better place as well.

PECO make 'performance' exhaust boxes (i.e. make a bit more noise than standard). They are not 'universal' - but it could probably be 'made' to fit depending on how much work you want to do. personally I wouldn't bother.
Is there no part no. on it?

Put the Polo on a hoist and offer the fiver silencer up to where the original hangs. If it looks like it might fit, then measure the diameter of the Polo exhaust that will have to fit into the inlet pipe of the back box. Also check the hanging points. If all that looks feasible you might then be prepared to take the risk of using a hacksaw. Be aware that even if you manage to fit it to the pipe and hang it properly, part of the rear suspension may still hit it on compression.

will the stainless steel exhaut improve performance of the car?

With a catalytic converter in the way it will not improve gas flow as significantly as it might have done on a non-catted exhaust with a free-flow manifold. It might, however, increase the noise level of the car. Really more appropriate for a Corsa than for a Polo.

I would sell it on eBay. Those Peco DTM boxes are about £100 new, so a Corsa driver would probably pay at least £30 for it.

Does the box have numbers / letters stamped or pressed into it?

nothing else marked on the exhaust.

The tip which will fit into the centre exhaust is 2inches in diameter.

The two tail pipes that stick out are 3.5" each

So does that mean if my exhaust that is currently on the polo has a 2" joining section the new sports exhaust will fit.

Can you post a link to a photo of the exhaust?

If the box has 2 tailpipes will you have to cut the polo's rear panel / bumper?

I will take pic when I get home

The exhaust tail pipes are kind of gonig down and then upswept at the end. i was plannig to cut a hole inside the bumper and the exhaust can slot through the exhaust.
I hope it fits

Is it easy to fit a backbox?
Might have a go myself!

Is it easy to fit a backbox ?

Let's put it this was . You dont' need a PhD to get a job at Kwik-fit . Some mechanical sympathy and experience would be useful though .

It may even reduce the performance. I built a kit car a few years ago (JPR Wildcat-Cortina based Etype look-alike ) to which I temporarily fitted an exhaust based on the original Cortina boxes to pass its first MOT. When the car was drivable I had an exhaust made up by an exhaust centre (Transit V4 box in reverse + twin pipes bent round rear axle + original Jaguar rear tail pipes) Sounded great and looked the part but the car seemed to loose quite a bit of power (incorrect back pressure etc?)
