I received an email warning that specs speed cams have or are being installed at Blackwall Tunnell approach Nth & Sth bound. No speed cam warning signs are being put up. Apparently they just want our hard earned cash £60. No penatly points on Licence. Speed limit afaik is 30mph nth bound and 40MPH goin' sth.I cannot verify authenticity of email but be warned all the same guys.
All the best Mikey

3rd time in as many weeks this news has been reported here Mikey; feeling is it's an urban myth/chain email. As someone said earlier, did it end "forward this to everyone you know?"

"The Video Incident Detection system of the Blackwall tunnel Southbound Bore for Transport for London (TfL) is already in operation."

Also been confirmed by a member of Plod on Pistonheads as well, they exist & work!

This info has been posted at least 4 times on Pepipoo and the moderator is getting quite cross with people repeating the alleagtion. They seem very sure they are NOT SPECS cameras. Anyone know different for sure?

What a disbelieving lot!
Read this thread on Pistonheads, the final comment is from Hollywood Wheels who is a London based POLICEMAN, who apologises to the original poster & says they are there!

Sorry to keep on about this, but scare tactic and hoax emails really get my goat: as do the people who forward them without checking them out on symantec and scopes.
Interesting: which site is more authoritative? Pepipoo or Pistonheads? Moderator on Pepipoo has closed discussion on the thread, and posters there are adamant that the cameras are video cameras installed for security. They also have a link to
tinyurl.com/2egwfp a document outlining the work.
and the discussion is at
forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=17423&hl=Bl...l
another quote from yet another forum where this info has been posted is interesting:
"interesting snippett. Question is, who is running the cameras? You see, if it is police/safety camera partnership, then there is no say over the fine/points - it's set in stone by statute (although that is being reviewed).
Which means it would have to be a local authority/private concern, neither of which (to my knowledge) have the authority to issue fines for speeding!! As the tunnel is a public road, even if it is 'run' by a private company (eg the dartford tunnel) then the Road Traffic Act applies, as do the thousands of other offences covered by the Road Traffic Offenders Act.
Are you completely sure of your info, only I heard a similar rumour about the dartford Tunnel recently, and I know for a fact that that was untrue!!!!!!"
Is there anyone out there who can give an authoritative response one way or the other? Anyone got a totally reliable, recently updated, safety camera detector? If the databases have been updated to show "Specs camera" as you approach the tunnel I guess that would be a positive steer.

This is the e-mail. Basically a PR release. But interesting if it is true that the penalties will be fines only, no points.
New "undercover" Speed Cameras which were introduced a few weeks ago on the A12 are going 'live' on Monday.
We have had a tip-off from the BTST Locator update team that small 'specs' cameras have been sited both north and south of the Blackwall tunnel on the A12 in London.
The cameras have been sited in a deliberate speeding hotspot (because the limit reduces to 30 very suddenly without any advance warning) and the fine has been raised from the usual 60 pounds, to 100 POUNDS per offence.
But here is the really unusual thing...
They have NOT installed signs warning drivers of this speed trap.
Why?
Because they are not be going to be hitting drivers with a licence endorsement as you would usually expect...
...they are just going to take our hard earned cash instead!
This is just the latest case of blatant profiteering from the countries "safety camera" partnerships.
Our information tells us that these new cameras are going 'live' from Monday (12th February).
The speed limit for the tunnel is 30 mph northbound and 40 mph southbound.
If you already own a BTST Locator, then I strongly suggest you update it NOW before the cameras go live.
If not, then you can grab your own Locator at: www.speedcameralocator.com/promo/

They can hardly be accused of profiteering, from charitable contributions. I have no empathy with people who expect exemption from speed limits.
|
It's not about empathy for speeders, it's about city restricting dual lane tunnel that used to have 50mph limit on both ends to 30mph just so they can profit from a normal commuter flow. Everyone will do 25mph just to be sure which will increase already bad congestion two fold. Possibly even give perfect excuse for extending Congestion Charge to Canary Wharf and East London. And for what? When was the last time someone died or caused serious accident in Blackwall Tunnel?

Probably PIPS,which will get you even if you do change lanes(SPECS only monitors one).

I didn't realise that drivers had no accidents in the Blackwall tunnel. Wonder why they bothered to upgrade the emergency provisions then?
