Nissan Tino 2.2 Diesel - Good? - mad un
Hello all,

I' m considering a Nissan Tino 2.2 diesel as a relaible, no nonsense, no fuss, get in and go, carry the baby gear, carry the mountain bikes, tow the trailer, a2b mobile. Fancied the Toyota Verso, but at pushing 3k more for the same plate I backed off. Any comments on the Tino?

Cheers,

I think that Nissan use Renault diesel engines which can be troublesome and expensive to maintain. The Technical Matters Back Room is full of posts about Renault diesels. I remember one last year that mentioned the very high warranty repair work that Nissan has been experiencing since teaming up with Renault. More recent posts are warning of huge bills for replacement clutches on modern diesel cars generally. As a diesel owner myself, I'm disappointed at the high servicing costs compared to petrol and will not go for a diesel again.

Thanks Galad, you have just answered my recently entered follow on post. Have the Tino diesel engines always been Renault, do you know?

Hi all,

Carrying on from my slightly earlier post about the Nissan Tino 2.2 diesel. I have recently had the hassle of my 1.9cdi renault scenic's egr valve sticking, which as some of you on this site kindly pointed out, can be a sign of worse to come. So I will be trading this in (the car is now ?fixed? under warranty, but the trust is gone). I was looking at the tino with dreams of Japanese reliability, but I have now spotted that it has a Renault engine! (Thanks to those who answered my first post on 27/1 ? Screwloose, I now see your point about the Tino). Is this THE notorious Laguna 2.2 cdi lump of which there is so much bad press about on these (and other) pages? If so, maybe it's time to have a closer look at Tino reliability ratings. Maybe it's also time to bite the bullet and pay the extra few thousand on the same plate for a Toyota Corolla Verso? Comments, please.

Cheers,

Madun

It doesn't have a Renault engine. Renault diesels are belt cam. The Tino's 2.2 is chain cam, same as in a Primera, Almera and X-Trail. But that engine has had turbo and intercooler problems that may have been caused by failed or blocked EGR valves.

Thanks HJ. When you say 'that' engine, are you refering to the Renault or the Nissan? Any problems with the Tino's diesel engine?

Thanks

He means the Nissan engine in the Tino. It has to be said the Tino is not the best nissan have turned out, Recent nissans are not that reliable. \if you want no hastle you need to look at that verso again.

Thanks TVM, will do.

2.2 Di had turbo and intercooler problems. Never heard of it affecting 2.2 dCi, certainly never experienced any problems with both Nissan dCi's I had...

[Nissan 2.2 dCi are NOT Renault engines. Grrr...]

The Nissan dCi's aren't that good. Stick with a Petrol Nissan or the Toyota - either fuel type. The Nissan 'soot blower' isn't good !

Petrol Nissan and Petrol Toyota owner here. Won't touch a modern 'soot' blower.

I had a Nissan X-Trail 2.5 petrol - brilliant engine. Bomb proof and loads of torque. I know from the X-Trail Yahoo Group that the Nissan 2.2 Dci is unbelievably unreliable. Blown turbos, ECU and EGR problems. Apparently Nissan have no idea what the problem is and are burying their heads in the sand in the hope that the problem will go away. I can't for the life of me understand why magazines like What Car continue to recommend the diesel X-Trail and rubbish the petrol which is a far more reliable car - and much nicer to drive. I'd avoid the diesel like the plague! If you want diesel buy a Toyota. The Honda diesel has issues - especially poor mpg.

Thanks all,

As they say, there's no smoke without fire. Some say "No, not the Tino!" No one has said "No, not the Verso!" I' ll be digging a bit deeper in my shallow pockets for the Toyota, I think.

A tidy Verso T3 D4D is now mine! And, reliability aside, what a pleasant beast. Goodbye Renault, hello Toyota. It's due new back tyres and a 20k servicing but hey, what price peace of mind (I hope!) Any recs on decent tyres?

Cheers

Renault 2.0 is chain.
The 2.2 has a Renault block but everything else is Nissan.
