Hi,
I read in the Mail on Saturday a story about drivers paying for victims of violence, tell me its an april fools wind up?
It said that a surcharge/fine would be added to any penalty that a driver caught speeding would face, £15 on top of anything else, the money would apparently go to help pay for victims of violence!
While I have every sympathy for people beaten by their partner, surely the perpetrator should pay for the crime, and not motorists yet again.

No - fact. Initially the extra will be added to fines set as a result of a court appearance. Later it will be all fixed penalties as well.
The bit I couldn't swallow is that lowlifes sent to jail won't have this surcharge.

You have to remember that to a dyed in the wool socialist who doesn't drive, motorists are the lowest of the low, especially those who transgress (apparently 1,000,000 are on the verge of losing their licences through totting up). So another tax on motoring offenders is more easily justified than any other means of raising the tax revenue.

I think I might just stay in Chernobyl rather than return to this place...

Oh - and the driving license if going up in price as well - except for converting from the "lasts until you're 70" paper license to a plastic photo license you need to renew regularly.

Just another small step on the road to a totalitarian state...:-(
