Jailed for lying over speeding - machika
I saw a report, in a recent issue of the Daily Mail, that three members of a mega rich family (father, mother and son) have been given jail sentences for perjury, regarding two instances of speeding involving the son. It appears the family were advised to lie by a certain well known lawyer, who specialises in representing the well healed members of society in cases such as this. He is now facing a charge himself, it would appear.

The family appealed against the original sentences and how now been given reduced sentences, owing to the fact that they were advised to lie by the lawyer (as if they didn't know what they were doing).

On looking at the report again, it seems it is unclear whether the charge that the lawyer is facing is connected with the above case. However, the appeal judge apparently agreed to cut their sentences, after accepting that they had acted on the advice of their solicitors.

These people are from my neck of the woods. There is a much bigger article in my 'local' paper, but sadly, no internet link to it. From reading it, it doesn't look to good for certain people.

No sympathy at all.
Wouldn't it have been easier for them to just take their son's 2nd speeding conviction on the chin like most normal people have to? It might have taught him to slow down.
This is good that it proves that nobody is above the law.
Wasn't there a famous case 20 or 30 years ago when a famous tory MP got off a drink driving charge, some ambiguity as to if he or his secretary driving? A phrase came to mind "The poor get the law, the rich get justice"
Perjury is a crime against the criminal justice system and as such, is still heavily punishable.
If you can't do the time, don't commit the crime.
It the family is so rich, surely the son can afford to use taxis or employ a driver if he tots up enough points for a ban.

From the same source

" New bail date for 'Mr Loophole' Apr 12 2007

CELEBRITY lawyer Nick Freeman, who was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to pervert the course of justice, had his bail date extended again today.

Mr Freeman was arrested in Manchester last October as part of an investigation carried out by Gwent Police in Wales.

He had been due to answer bail today, but a Gwent Police spokeswoman said the date has now been deferred to May 8.

It is the second time Mr Freeman, known as ?Mr Loophole? for his ability to help motorists escape convictions, has had his bail date deferred. He had originally been due to answer bail last month.

Mr Freeman, from Mere, Cheshire, has represented celebrities including Sir Alex Ferguson, model Caprice and former England captain David Beckham with his Manchester-based firm, Freeman & Co Solicitors"

With this outstanding I guess we should just watch and wait

I seem to recall an article in the Press that he was "helping the Police" in one of the South Wales Forces about 12 months ago.......dunno what the outcome was.

It is still before the courts so he could well be proven innocent however it amazes me that a judge could be facing such charges.

Seems like greed caused this family's downfall too, as they appear to have got away with it until they applied for defence costs, which resulted in the police making further enquiries and subsequently unearthing the truth of the matter. Seems like some people can never have enough money.

Personally, I don't think it was right to reduce the sentences on the basis that they were, allegedly, advised to lie by their solicitors, particularly as the mother used to be a lawyer and would have been fully aware of the possible ramifications of their actions.

Well well, Nick Freeman in court for allegedly conspiring to pervert the course of justice. Surely not? The fact that he gets so many people off speeding charges with elaborate and far fetched excuses has always seemed very suspicious to me. However, I guess he must remain innocent until proven to be a dishonest lying toad, oops, I meant to say "until proven guilty".
