There is also the reprehensible idea of tracking cars for "road charging" by GPS. All this sort of thing ought to be resisted as strongly as possible, IMO.

Hills the numberplate people developed this for the UK at least 5 years ago, but the government did not go for it, preferring instead its much more expensive GPS solution. Though, in fairness, that was probably an EC decision rather than a UK one.
