S-Max - are they being sold? - Mike H
I've only seen two S-MAXs on the road, and being a bit of a petrolhead I tend to notice new cars. Have they not gone down as well as Ford hoped, and are the sales as dire as my experience makes it seem?

I have to say I have seen quite a few considering how long its been on sale.

I've probably seen a dozen or so which isn't that many when you spend 3 hours in the car on rush hour motorways every day.

To be honest, the Galaxy seems to be selling better if sightings are anything to go by. They're everywhere.

Cheers

I've read that S-Max sales are vastly ahead of plan. I see lots round here (Warwickshire) - although too many are in Inevitable Silver, so they may all be the same one! There's a black one that looks like a taxi, a grey one, and at least one each in the colours I think suit its bold design: White Grape (pale gold), Blue Ambition and the one I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to order, Rusty Brown - sorry, Tango.

I think that Tango colour looks fabulous! Not many cars could pull that colour off, but the S-Max manages it.

Mind you I have dubious taste. I liked the mk1 Mondeo in Citrine Yellow (also known as Stabilo Boss highlighter yellow)....

BiL has just ordered his second S-Max from the Ford management scheme.

He likes the S-Max as it's roomier than the C-Max or Mondeo Estate and not as cumbersome as the Galaxy.

Hundreds and hundreds in London but not so many Galaxys (Galaxies), which seem to be more favoured as taxis.
S-Max - are they being sold? - Honestjohn
Some local authorities won't allow S-Max and Galaxys to be used as taxis because they have no spare wheel. But the wait list for S-Max is now quite long, because production capacity on the Genk production line has been taken from them in order to build Mondeos.

did anyone else find it odd how they released 2 very similar models around the same time though: S max & new Galaxy?

Not at all odd, the S-Max, Galaxy and new Mondeo are all built on the same line so production can switch with demand.

I understand it was a flash of inspiration that allowed someone's 'wacky' concept to make it to production and open up a new niche in the market. I wouldn't consider a Galaxy; I would certainly consider an S-Max. Shared production facilities help - there's not much dedicated to the S-Max that can't also be used to make Mondeos or Galaxies, according to demand.

Lots around here and a few Galaxys plus of course the Checker cars fleet at Bristol Airport which must comprise 15 to 20 new Galaxys.

Parts sharing is a factor though line sharing is the real key, keeping the line and workforce best employed despite varying demand from model to model.

Yes, plenty of S-Maxes in Bucks and western suburbs of London. Selling rather better than Galaxy, I'd say. And it was developed on a hunch and it is far exceeding Ford's sales expectations.

I today have been looking at the S-max and Corrola verso t180 , but afetr having my heart set on the corrolla i have now opted for the s max , but there is a 10 week waiting list and demo`s up for sale are very few.

A few of us, me included, would be interested in hearing your reasoning for picking the S-Max over the Verso, HB.
And what colour did you go for? }:---)
S-Max - are they being sold? - boxsterboy
I too see loads around West London.

I think I too would choose one in preference to a Verso. Haven't driven either, but have been a back seat passenger in a Verso. The S-Max is from a class above and is much roomier, from what I can see.
S-Max - are they being sold? - heartburn
i wanted a verso just for the power i guess, neither has it ticked many boxes, i have had ford cars since i started driving , and there are things you get used to ,which the verso does not have, ie listening to radio with no ignition key. i looked at the verso again first after a few months ,then went to look at the s max and back to the verso, the verso does not look appealing compared to the s max, choice of colours does not exite me.also basically the smax is roomier, yes the s max costs more ,just a second slower to 60 for a smaller engine.
S-Max - are they being sold? - heartburn
the s max looks an exciting car the verso looks bland
S-Max - are they being sold? - cheddar
The Verso is not an entertaining chassis to drive where as the S-Max by all acounts is, also IME of the Avensis the 2.2 180 is torque shy below 2000rpm where as the S-Max 2.0 will pull like a train from 1600 ish.

Also the Ford/PSA units power outputs are quoted conservatively, the 134bhp version in the Focus/C-Max is typically found to be around 152bhp in std form by the tuning companies so the 138 may be actually as much as 155, i.e the gap to the 177bhp Toyota might be less than it appears.

Word has it that Ford have sold ALL of their 2.0 diesel allocation - if you want to order a 2.0 diesel it won't be delivered until October.
