Hi all,
the daltonman household are leaving wintry Cumbria and driving to the (hopefully) warmer regions of France in a couple of weeks time.
As we're travelling with another family, in our separate cars, we were thinking of taking our walkie-talkies (the small, cheapo kind with 8 selectable channels - I'm sure you all know the kind I mean) with us so that the two cars can keep in touch with one another as we go on day-trips etc (only passengers will be doing the talking of course).
My question is - are these walkie-talkies legal to use in France?
I'm pretty sure they are, but it's best to find out now rather than feel the long arm of the law....
cheers in advance.

I have used them between cars in France and up in the mountains while skiing and none of the locals has ever said anything.

tinyurl.com/hme8g confirms that PMR446 radios are legal.

Yes, they are legal - I bought a set over here a couple of years ago.
We'll keep hoping for better weather, too...

Used car to car, they can interfere with the cars electronics.

HJ may well be right, but I have just been away for a few days and used them to keep contact between 3 minibuses (diesels) and didn't notice any problems. They were cheapos from Curry's (the walkie talkies) and I was surprised by their effectiveness over quite a distance (3-5km or so) even in mountainous N. Wales - especially since there was no mobile phone signal. Some we used a few years ago were rubbish - it was easier to shout!

Used car to car they can interfere with the cars electronics.
It would be an extremely poor car that was affected by half a Watt of 466MHz RF energy.
When I've parked under Fylingdales and their Megawatts of power at similar frequencies, it's only some radio central locking devices that suffer.
A lot of the emergency services are, or used to be at similar frequencies with much greater power and they didn't suffer.

Oh here we go again....:(

Have you got a refernce for this HJ?
If a few milliwatts at PMR446 can affect electronics I need to be more careful with the mobile (and avoid driving over the Holme Moss road!!!)

Sounds like an urban myth to me. I would like to see evidence. Have used them for many years car-to-car when travelling in convoy (including in France).
