Read Hj's Yaris D-4D road test with great interest but was amazed to hear he was doing 44mph in second (which was good for 50) and doing 77MPH in third. John, John, John, please help me to understand this correctly. That poor little engine must have been screaming its guts out. As a Yaris D-4D owner (first in the country, methinks) I could never put my car through such punishment. Are the figures you present correct? Are you sure the speedometer was reading MPH and not KPH? I find your figures very hard to believe. Explanation please.

I remember being invited to Silverstone by our contracted Toyota dealership. I had the chance to drive the new Yaris around the track, but I have to ask myself why? The guys at Silverstone were great professional racing drivers, these poor Yaris's were screaming their guts out.
In answer to your question does it help a car in its earlier life to have the foot pressed to the floor in order to loosen the valves so giving it better performance in its later life or is it better to gently touch the accelerator.

Welcome home, Spud. No, 50 in 2nd (speedo 52) at 5,000rpm and (speedo) 77 in 3rd at 5,000rpm. Happily cruising at 80 - 90. And still averaging 63mpg. But I did get the impression that the speedo might be over-reading just a tad. Obviously I wasn't taking it to 5k all the time. But it's good to give a diesel a bit of welly a few times a week. Helps self-clean the injectors, blows the soot out of the exhaust and makes it more efficient. Unfortunately, I'm now replying blind because I've gone and answered to Gary's post. Do take note of the sticker on the side of the dashboard as you get out to let your turbo simmer after a hard run on the motorway or long uphill slog.

Right, well that does it John. I'm gonna tell your Mum.
She'll never let you drive her car again.

She never let me drive it anyway.

>>She never let me drive it anyway.
And I don“t blame her, she probably saw how you treated the MINI.
A highlight of my last trip to the UK would be the words ".....and let me show you how it goes round roundabouts".

Spud, no harm in running a motor up to the redline. Things like generators, tractors, combines etc run all day there.
