VED price increases - oldgit
When did VED prices go up? I have just written a checque for my current car (for £140) and then realised that last year and the year before that the duty was only £125. I must have missed a pre-budget speech in which these increases were announced.

At one point the VED for diesels was less than petrol but that differential was taken off quietly.

Quoted VED rates appear to apply for the tax year, i.e. 6th April one year to 5th April the next year. tinyurl.com/3y29d8

I got bill from the leasing company for £5 because the tax on my car has gone up over the year since it was last taxed. Thought it was a bit cheeky to be honest - I already pay them to tax my car for me!

Incidentally, who sets the bands as they currently are and which dept. actually do the measurements in order to ascertain the Carbon emissions for each new car manufactured?

No-one actually measures CO2 emissions - it's calculated from the EC Combined fuel economy figure which is tested by the vehicle manufacturer to EC Directive 1999/100.

In that case the tables might just as well state the EC combined fuel economy figures. CO2 emission figures are completely meaningless to the hoi polloi.

CO2 figures are consistent across the EC, without conversion - mpg and litres/100km aren't.

Wrong way round. The fuel economy figure is calculated from the emissions.

It was 23rd March 2006 and 22nd March 2007 so it presumably relates to Budget Day.
