Today's Jargonbuster Editing - Honestjohn
Unfortunately whoever edited today's Jargonbuster in the paper missout out some vital bits and whoever checked it can't add up. Here's what I wrote before the subbertage:-

What's the law on speedometers?

Regulation 35 Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regs 1986 stipulates that every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer except:- those that can?t do more than 25mph; motorbikes under 100cc, invalid carriages and works trucks first used before 1/4/1984; any vehicle first used before 1937. On vehicles first used on or after 1/4/1984, the speedometer must indicate speed in mph and kph, or must comply with EC Directive 97/39 or ECE reg 39. The most important bit is that all speedometers must never indicate less than the true speed of the vehicle and between 40kph and 120kph the error must not exceed 10% + 2.5mph (or 4kph) over the true speed. This means that at a true speed of 25mph or 40kph the Speedo may read up to 5mph (8kph) high. That?s why you can and do get stuck behind drivers holding a steady 25mph in a 30zone.
