My Mother-in-Laws 'N' plate space wagon stopped going mid-week. Garage which now has vehicle (100 miles away from me, so I've not been able to look) says engine turns over, but NO compression showing on any of the cylinders.
I'm puzzled.
Any ideas guys?

Snapped timing belt. It's the one thing that goes on these motors. Pull back the plastic cover to have a look and confirm.

Tim, as HJ says, sounds like busted cam belt. If the garage haven't worked this out yet, I should shift it some place else to get it fixed, some place that knows what they're doing!!

Thanks, gentlemen, I appreciate the information. Two things, though : 1) it has a full main agent service history, so I presume it should have been changed according to schedule, and 2) Is this likely to have resulted in valves meeting pistons? What sort of collateral damage is there going to be?

The timing belt would not normally have been replaced as part of a standard service, but the owner should have been asked if they want to pay anything from £100 to £200 to have it done (many refuse). I believe this is an 'interferance engine', so valves could have hit pistons, but if it's turning over without tinkling sounds then she could have got away with it.

Thanks, HJ, yes, it's the timing belt. She's been quoted UKP1,322 for repair. Is it worth going with that? How much would a re-manufactured engine cost? (ball park figure) given the engine's covered 100k, what's the advice about the best option?

Tim,
There are several firms able to supply used/imported Japanese engines in UK - Japan emission legislation means that engines are frequently deemed "end of life" long before they really are, commonly at 30-50k miles. Look in Exchange + Mart or Autotrader for numbers. I would have thought you could get a complete engine (and, MOST IMPORTANT, have a new cambelt fitted) for the same sort of price as quoted for repair.

What cars are non-interference engines

|
See car-by-car breakdown, non-interference engines are commented on in the individual car descriptions, the only one I can think of is the Mazda MX5 though.

HJ;-
Playing safe;- what life/mileage should be expected from a Space Wagon timing belt ?
