The site appears to be down as I write,so I haven't read the bit you're referring to, but it struck a chord.

I just re-registered mny Ford F-150 4X4 for a year. When I bought it new last year it cost P1275 (say USD 26) for 12 months. Then it was classified as a regular pickup truck. This year the Philippine govt has discovered the SUV concept. Now my truck costs me P4725 p.a. (USD 95) :-[

I think the Kenworth is fine but over-reaches a bit...I had an SUV in mind based on a HumVee.....

The SUV has found its natural home in the Philippines. The perfect pose cum anti-kidnap cum traffic intimidator. The formula is neat. Get two (or preferably 3) Suburbans or Expeditions. Must be in black, must have blacked out windows, must not have identifying marks of any kind and definitely no license plates. Result: kidnappers don't know which one has the wealthy wife and kids and which one has the armed goon bodyguards.

All 3 must drive bumper to bumper and ignore all traffic signals (stopping is dangerous), and must double or triple park next to the dept store entrance or the school. Hold up/block the other plebs? Yeah, of course, we're rich Filipinos, can't you see that? Don't get between us or we'll run you off the road.

That's how it works here.

Incidentally Randolph I have some pics of Mustang One and Growlette. Latter in bathing suit and no motoring link except her link to me. Should I mail them across?

I think the Peterbuilt SUV would just the thing for the mom taking the team to practice.... and you just do not get a better 'fear of god factor' FOGF in reference to other traffic in something that will fit on the road... of course the 12 wheel drive of the kenworth has it's attractions I grant you
as to your local conditions the frame should have no problems with the weight of armor tha would defeat even a TOW missile... would increase the the cost of the end product a bit I expect....

The car winning the award of "most likely to be kidnapped from" in Rio & Sao Paulo is a Cherokee.

I really don't understand why people still drive them, although it seems there are gradually getting the message.

Car most likely to be doing something illegal with drugs is a Pajero (is that a Shogun in the UK ? Its a Montero in Chile)

Actually quite an interesting article in Car & Van Technology the other day which confirmed what we all suspected.

a) average fuel consumption in Europe has reduced, though improvements in last few years have been largely offset by increases in porkiness of cars, extra kit and legislative effects largely environmental in their aim.

b) average fuel consumption in USA has increased markedly. The report authors blamed this largely on a significant market share being lost by cars to SUV, pickups and minivans.

Isn't the USA minivan the most oddly named vehicle, I know what I think of as a minivan and it was largely designed by Issigonis methinks.

" average fuel consumption in Europe has reduced, though improvements in last few years have been largely offset by increases in porkiness of cars, extra kit and legislative effects largely environmental in their aim."

The fact that technical advances have been largely offset by "legistative effects largely environmental in their aim" says it all. The old saying "A camel is a horse designed by a committee" comes to mind.
