HJ's road test has arrived! - tyro
Turns out that Friday 13th was a pretty good day, after all. HJ's long awaited (at least if you are a Berlingo enthusiast) road test of the new Berlingo has arrived.

In fact, this event is soooooooo important, that I thought it was worth starting a new thread, rather than posting yet another post on mlj's thread.

I was somewhat surprised at the comment "So instead of being quite good for a van, it actually is car-like to drive with a fine blend of ride and handling that belie its utilitarian looks."

Personally, I thought that the old Berlingo was pretty car-like to drive with a fine blend of ride and handling.

I'd be very interested in a test which actually drove and compared the old and new Berlingos back to back.

What do other Berlingoistas think?

(by the way, I notice that both the new Berlingo and the 2002 facelift are both the Berlingo II. There is clearly a need to arrive at agreement about numbering.

That test was delayed several hours by a crashed server (not at hjuk). Possibly due to the Friday the 13th virus re-emerging.

But I can tell Tyro straight off that compared to the new Berlingo on its C4 Picasso/308 SW underpinnings, the old one is a van.

A good van, but comparatively a van.

5 people could travel a very long way in comfort in the new Berlingo.

As a newcomer to the Berlingo ll (see mlj's 15K etc.) but not Citroens, as I've had 3 previous "quirky" Citroens from the GSA, Famillialle, & lastly the DTR Turbo ll, what a car & a half that was, I can vouch for the above post from HJ. where he quotes
"5 people could travel a very long way in comfort in the new Berlingo."

As for previous Berlingo's, pass.

Thanks for that, HJ. Interesting. It must be very good indeed!

I don`t know. A lot of people liked the practical van based earlier model and it seems to have gone up significantly in price too. If its moving towards semi-luxo-barge territory, away from its practical non cab forward Van roots, it may possibly wither on the vine and turn people towards the Doblo.
Problem is even vans are becoming `cab forward` that could progress to a full Pushmi Pullu, with the driver sat in the centre, cargo in front and behind and going nowhere.

In other words, when is the next CHEAP, super practical conventional van based car going to emerge? Bet its from Fiat.

I'm inclined to agree with you Oilrag.

I suppose the idea of the new model is to make it a bit more appealing to more trendy youthful people.
Maybe the old model doesn't have the greatest looks in the world, but i would say the thousands of very level headed and wise people that have bought them couldn't give two hoots if it doesn't have street cred.
Us more mature (alright older) buyers value simplicity and ease of use very highly.

I like most things about the old one too, step aboard, acres of room above your head no need to limbo under the windscreen, start with a key (instantly, no wait like the new one), engines are sweet and lots of low down power, nice gearbox, good visibility.

I think the price of the new one will come down in due course, most new models are overpriced as there will always be somebody prepared to pay any amount to be the first in the new.

A new Fiat doblo? Must be due soon, the old one seems to have been hanging around for ages.
I wonder if Fiat will have the good sense to offer a high powered diesel with a proper auto box, that will really give the new berli a kicking.
Another good idea for them, new petrol doblo with LPG as standard?
I've got me order written out ready..:)

There is no auto opion on the new Berlingo according to the French Citroen website.
I think that the new model moves the Multispace on and, yes, I agree, prices will fall once the novelty has worn off.

May i be the first to wish you many happy returns, and many more to come.

Bit of a bind though all those 'combined' presents. Saved me a fortune as my daughter was born near Christmas.:)

Now live to be a right old codger and get some value out of all the lolly you've paid in :)

Are you trendy then? Flares? Gelled hair sticking up like you just got out of bed?

Gangsta tattoos? Sony wii? Spend all day texting? Combat trousers at half mast? Slip on trainers, with footsie sox under? Peaked chav cap?
Anyway you're not proper trendy, you don't have his'n'hers matching black golf gti's with sequential private plates...or do you?

gordonbennet, thanks for your good wishes,

& apart for the gti's you've got me to a tee. ;) ;) ;)

To clarify. The Berlingo 1 that continues in production is the original Berlingo + the facelift of the original Berlingo.

mlj has a Berlingo 1 facelift, not a Berlingo II.

The Berlingo II is the new one that has just arrived in the UK, not the facelift Berlingo 1.

Indeed I do have a facelifted Berlingo. But I didn't put the II in the original thread!

Now I'm confused! So what is my 3week old 2008 Berlingo Multispace classed as,
apart from, that is , a nice motor.

If I'm reading these posts correctly, when I'm asked "What yer got" I say "A Citroen Berlingo Multispace plus facelift" or put another way, "An Anne Robinson Citroen"
(Think about it) ;) ;) ;)

KB,
If you go to Cit UK website yours, (and mine) are called Berlingo First
www.citroen.co.uk/new-cars/citroen-berlingo-first/
and the new one is "New Berlingo Multispace" if you want to look it up, but Berlingo Multispace if you get details under "New Cars"
www.citroen.co.uk/new-cars/citroen-berlingo-multis.../
Mind you, as is usual with Cit Uk's website, there are cock-ups (is that allowed as in male hen-ups??) because if you go to 360 degree views of exterior you get new Berlingo exterior, but if you go to "360deg views interior" you will find views of yours (and mine) and not the new one!
I think they are very different cars (and prices) and according to HJ and Citroen our "vans" will continue in production alongside the "New Berlingo". Mine cost about £10k 2 years ago (with interest -free credit!) but to get same stuff on new model it would cost almost £15K - think I'll stick with mine for a few years more.
Yours looks great by the way - I pondered over Sahara Gold (beige!)and your colour and eventually plumped for the beige - but a very close run thing. Hope you enjoy your Berlingo First - I do!

Hi all. I've put this thread on the 15k post as well, as there is confusion all round methinks. Not that this thread of mine will clarify owt! ;-)

Hi all, Had a bit of time to spare (retired, & all that) ;-) so I rang CS @ Citroen UK
for definition of the models. They say that up to the new new new model now appearing in UK showrooms, all previous Berlingos' were/are erm! Berlingo Multispaces'
Not 1st nor ll (As PhillW said nothing appears on their website) & the new model is called the Multispace XTR or VTR, but they hadn't a clue what the letters stand for???? Now, I'm fairly certain that I've seen an XTR on the 'net when I first became interested in the Berlingo, which was a two-tone & looked smart, but that, as far as I'm aware was/is available now as a current model!!!
Confusion reigns.

I don't know why they didn't just call it Berlingo Multispace 111 (or III or 3).

The new (new) Peugeot Partner Teepee (new (new) Berlingo with a lion on the front) got a good write-up from Steve Cropley in today's Autocar, despite the fairly hefty price hike for the new (new) ones over the old new ones.
