Just been reading on the www.andyspares.co.uk forum about another XUD TD conrod ending up on the outside of the block. This time in a ZX. Don't know what year it is, but anybody want a bet?

False alarm! The above turns out to be a 1994 XUD TD engine so probably unconnected with the previous 306 engine failures.

There have always been isolated conrod failures on XUTDs. But the problem with the 97/98 XUTDs isn't isolated failures. It's multiple failures.
