2005 2.0Hdi Rising dip-stick - Dereksn51
Strange one this but I'm sure someone will have experienced this problem.Car's a 55 reg Berlingo 2.0Hdi with 25k on clock .Have checked the oil level and found the dip-stick about an inch out of it's holder.Oil level fine, not over-filled or anything.A week later the same thing-about an inch out of the holder.Anybody any ideas whats going on?Car's running fine.Never had any problems with it.

Blocked breather pipe causing pressurisation at speed. Remove brether pipe and oil seperator, if it has one, and clean in white spirit. Replace and see how it goes. Does this vehicle do a lot of short runs. Regards Peter

Diesel getting into the sump ? many causes, but it was uncompleted DPF regeneration that raised the sump level with diesel on my S type Jag.

I think he means dip stick is physically up out of its holder not that the oil level has risen.

Diesels-unlike petrols do not have positive crankcase ventilation-the gases from the crankcase are just fed into air cleaner and/or inlet manifold and so there will always be a slght pressure in the crankcase. The dipstick on a diesel is normally retained sufficiently firmly to overcome this slight pressure. It sounds as tho' you have a failure of this retention or,for some reason, you are getting higher pressures in the crankcase.

Check that the plastic engine cover hasn't become loose as they have a habit of doing, they then vibrate about and lift the dipstick slightly exactly as you describe.

This is a very common problem on Picassos fitted with this engine !

You may need to replace the rubber mounts on the engine cover, these are very cheap items from a Citroen dealer.
