My Fiat 500 dualogic manufactured March 2008 has started to go into neutral from any gear when stopped or moving, for no reason. Obviously this is dangerous in traffic. The car goes into neutral and I have to switch it off and start it up again. I took it for its first services and thet couldn't find anything wrong with it. If you have identified the problem, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Snap! We purchased a brand new showroom Fiat 500 dualogic in July 2009, and have recently experienced the same problem. Driving at approx 40 mph, the warning bing starts going mad, and the N on the display starts flashing ? and hey presto - we are driving along the road with no gears, engine still running. Unable to select gear, no drive power. Luckily the twice it has happened I wasn?t in traffic or overtaking. Imagine the consequences had I been. In at the dealers at the moment, a software re-install has got the gears back. But confidence in driving the vehicle is obviously seriously effected. Have reported the fault to Fiat UK as well. Awaiting their findings.

Similar problems with our C3 sensodrive but not potentially dangerous.
Used to select 2nd when stationary in 1st......it was powerful enough to pull away OK. Took it to Citroen who upgraded the software and it was cured.
Never trusted it after that...too clever for it's own good !
Traded it in as soon as we could for a proper auto.

Cant really offer any help, but can advise people to steer clear of these 'clever' automatics and semiautomatics. Selespeed, dualogic, DSG, multitronic etc all give problems when they are a few years old. We are starting to see a few out of warranty DSGs coming in now and we cant fix them, and neither can our local auto specialist who is one of the most experienced rebuilders in the country. Software is not accessible and most of the parts other than basic service parts are not obtainable. We have to bounce customers back to the main dealers who usually give a quote starting at £1500 and then work up. Selespeed was an almighty disaster, quite a few cars scrapped because of that system. Stick to a good oldfashioned slush box auto or a manual.

Problem is - how can you steer clear of such 'clever' things?
all new cars are being built with these 'clever' electronics, and when they go wrong, they are expensive to repair.

Ive said it before, and Ill say it again, by 7 or 8 years of age, most of todays cars will be scrapped, due to being uneconomic to repair.
cars will hold their value fairly well, until the end of the warranty, then prices will drop like lead balloons.
it will be the 2nd, and 3rd owners that will lose the most money, where as historically it has always been the 1st owner who took the hit.

Hello! Let me tell all of you my new Fiat 500 Dualogic Nighmare!!!!
I?ve bought the car on 24.11.2009 from Autocomo Constanta ? Romania and experienced this problem from the very first day.
After about 20km appeared the first fault ,from 2nd gear the N on display appeared and the car could not change gear. Second fault, same day, in the middle of crowded traffic , this time the car goes into neutral from 3rd gear, without changing manually the gear. Third time - guess what?! After stopping the car it went to N again and couldn?t start at all - the car could not change gear and start up.I took the car to the service that evening where it still is. They said I was about to be called anyway for a software upgrade (a recall they knew before - still I can?t imagine how they could sell a car that they knew could have a hidden vice!!!). They reinstalled the software and nothing happened- same problem when it was tested. They also changed an electronic card of the gearbox and other electronic parts but still not solving problems. Every time they were testing it other errors appeared. Simply could not see what is the real problem! I?ve noticed I?m not the only one with this kind of fault as soon as I searched on the web, on this forum and others ? some were solved, some still pending. Sure they are already aware of such a problem and I hoped that they will solve it succesfully but till now I?m sure they didn?t even talked with the Fiat HQ. The last answer from them was: ?we still don?t know what could be the problem so we still don?t know how to solve it but you must be confident that it will be solved?. Offf?. I have huge concerns about my driving safety and the quality of Fiat even it will be solved. I dreamed to have this car from the moment I first saw it and was presented as ?the car of the year? in 2008 and now I?m wondering if it was a good choice. Anyway, I?m waiting for more than 2weeks and I?m very determined to start the legal actions against them, they simply sold me a car with strong defects and driving it put me in real danger?. Since I "hear" more and more cases, hope all of you will have a better story than mine ?.

Having exactly the same problem with my wife's new Dualogic and dealer is denying there is a problem - nothing shows on the diagnostic's. Did you ever get a resolution to this one? Only had the car for a week when the problem appeared and now my wife will not drive the car owing to the risk.

I bought my new Fiat 500 in July 2013 (brand new) and within 4 days and 45 miles on the clock while driving along it just dropped out of gear and into neutral. The display still showed as the car being in gear though. I called my recovery company who arrived in 30 mins, however, by this time it had somehow reset itself and I was able to drive it again. Anyway, I took it to the dealership and they just looked at me as if I was making it up! They put it on their computer, told me there wasn't anything wrong with it but had re set everything. Fast forward 10 weeks, there I was driving along again and it happened again only this time it didn't re set it self. As we speak, it is in the workshop being repaired. I have been told that the problem is something to do with the "actuator", so they are replacing the whole unit at a cost of £2000, as the car is still very much under warranty fortunately there is no cost to myself.

This is such a dangerous fault though, it makes me feel sick that I have driven along motorways with my 9 year old son as a passenger at 70+mph over the last few months. If the gears had gone into neutral then we could have been killed!

a) If you are so concerned about your son's safety why were you exceeding the speed limit?

b) How does a gearbox slipping into neutral kill you? What prevents you indicating left and coasting gradually to a stop on the hard shoulder (as you would in a manual car if the engine cut out)?

Did you get to the bottom of your fault? I've been having the same problems with switching into neutral and also sometimes the warning light flashing on and the stop/start deactivating. I've also noticed problems with the car losing power when going up slight inclines. I even had it lose power altogether as I was going up a ramp in a car park - scary stuff, especially as there was a car behind me and it started to roll back when I tried to go forward. Very very disappointed and disgrunted.

When some of us started driving, there was no such thing as software. Happy days....

Surely a car the size of a Fiat 500 is far better suited to a manual gearbox?

I also have the same problem. Having the same car model, from April 2008. Now, with 80.000klm, i have this "gearbox problem" everyday. Some times from the 3rd gear, the N appears and the car can't change the gear. So i have to turn off the engine and try again. Some times, i have to wait 5 minutes before turn-on the engine again and try to the 1st gear. Some other times, trying to change the gear from 1st to R or from N to R, a sound stops me, a sound like the gears have no oil. This made me to be anxious. I visited Fiat dealer in my region a lot of times. They couldn't find why this is happening. After two weeks, they told me that the problem was to the plastic unit of oil which used for the automatic gearbox, with product number 5522264. It is fault caused by a leakage of the gearbox oil. I'm still searching for a spare part, but unfortunatelly, i didn't find anything.

Please, if anybody knows where i could search for this spare part, please let me know.
