Hey, motorprop, ANPR can detect if you are wearing the wrong brand of aftershave!
Seriously, though, the system is linked to the DVLA database that knows if the vehicle is taxed or MOTed as well as whether insure or not.

what about the overhead gantries - do they pick up and follow up on No MOT or tax ?

Just get an MOT and pay tax like the rest of us, then you won't have to worry.

well, when driving to a pre-arranged MOT whilst untaxed but insured , I passed under a phalanx of red - eye cameras pointing ominously at every lane of the North Circ... the system doesn't know about the pre-booked MOT , doctorchris ? That was about 6 weeks ago and I've heard nothing - hence the question.

Not all cameras are part of ANPR - yet. If your car passed and was insured and taxed you would have been fine anyway.

They alert a central control room that then looks to see if they have a mobile police officer in the immediate vicinity to find and stop the car in question. A lot easier in some areas due to the massive CCTV infrastructure.

A lot of police cars also hae ANPR cameras too. So can detect uninsured, untaxed and possibly no MOT just be driving around. Every now and again some areas (e.g. Manchester) setup ANPR traps. I saw one at the weekend on the A34 as it crosses the M60 - sure it was ANPR as if a speed camera they would not need the chase bikes.
Some normal CCTV on motorways etc also do ANPR now too... why do you ask?

The intent of this thread was discussions about ANPR. "Heavy Handed ANPR" is not a new thread. It is the original thread restored, rather than submerged into a general ANPR thread. I have to accept moderators decisions, just like any Backroomer, and accepted the decision to submerge it as well as this one to restore it.

I don't think anything has been lost has it? By design, I'm managing the ANPR threads at the moment. I split out the voluminous amount of posts re the "HJ incident" to allow this thread to remain a Discussion thread - it had become overburdened (we'd call it hijack elsewhere) with one ANPR instance which was entirely deserving of a thread in it's own right, and didn't belong in a general discussion thread.
I also moved a further load of more general ANPR discussion from the bottom of that thread back into this thread around lunchtime today. The Heavy Handed thread is still here www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=72...4, as I indicated above.
Messing with threads takes some time here, and there is significant risk of loss of some posts, so I hid this and the new thread while they were being worked on.
I think you'll find that the Heavy handed ANPR thread contains all the original posts related to that topic. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - however, due to the nature of the way the software works, if posts have been lost they cannot be recovered.

Sorry smokie, I thought the heavy handed thread had disappeared. All that has happened is that you have moved my post, which was specifically placed in that thread, to this one. Makes me look a bit barmy and inconsequential, but who cares?

It wasn't hijacked. But nice to see a moderator [Pologirl] being moderated for having "mis-policed" a thread! "police" was the verb used by HJ

I make no apologies for saying this again.
ANPR doe NOT find drivers with no insurance, MOT, RFL. It finds vehicles that do NOT show up on a data base as not having had those details recorded.
The system is only as good as the data base. Blind reliance on a computer server somewhere in the UK is not effective policing.' Computer says No " is funny on Little Britain, it is not funny when your car is confiscated and you are left trying to recover your costs because some one didn't punch the correct information in to a keyboard.

Would it be possible to find out how many vehicles have been seized in error through database errors, computer says no, or common sense failures. I dont know if freedom of information legislation covers this type of information, and would it require a request to each police authority?

A generic Risk Assessment is made at the time by the officer(s) in line with their training and professional experience which may or may not be recorded in their individual pocket note books.
