I've also driven RAV-4s with both 2.0 Valvematic Multidrive S CVT and 2.2 D-4D 150 6-spd auto.
In all cases the 1.8/2.0 Valvematic petrol engines with CVTs are far nicer to drive than the diesel manuals or automatics. Though the Avensis petrol CVTs are slightly behind the diesel torque converter autos in emissions and economy, the reverse is true of the RAV-4. Toyota told me they only do the diesel auto RAV-4 because they have to because that's what the market misguidedly wants (though it is, of course, better for towing).
Give me the petrol Valvematic CVTs any day.
