Hello everybody,
Thanks to this forum I've found quite a lot of people who were willing to fill in my questionnaire (15 in 2 days!!). The questionnaire is about car advertisements and it's for my masterthesis Business Communication in the Netherlands, regarding a cross-cultural research. The thing is that when I can find 15 more people to fill in my questionnaire: I will be done for sure and ready to write my thesis.
So everybody, are you going to be one of the last 15 respondents to fill in my online questionnaire? Please fill it in, it is really helping me a lot!! It should take about 7 minutes to fill it in.

Done it, can someone please explain how the guy on the horse was connected to selling a car? Lost me did that one!
Also why did you reverse the agree/disagree on Qs 4 and 5? Damned annoying!!

Yes, reversing the agree\disagree seems to be pointless - and when I realised what had happened I couldn't go back and check my previous answers so I sort of lost interest in the exercise.
Before that, I was congratulating myself on probably being the only person who took part in the questionnaire having seen just one of the adverts before (the Land Rover one).
It just seems to me that, these days, the world of car advertising is a very weird world indeed.

Quite a lot people had the same comment about reversing the answer scale, I realize it has become a possible issue for the results in the study. I have to write about it in my Discussion section at the end of my report. It's too late to change the questionnaire.
The thing is that it's some kind of trick to keep people alert and not just tick away.

I think the whole thing was quite clever attitudinal research. I too wondered why the ads had no text, but realised when I got the the questions at the end. I think tultje is going to make an excellent researcher because he already knows how to get honest answers without asking direct questions (to which you do not get honest answers). I'll be very interested in the report.

I did the survey but, as I have not seen any of the adverts, I was unable to answer any of the questions.

Honesty is neither here nor there though HJ. Allowing respondents to talk freely about an advertisement and recording what they say does eventually produce patterns of comment and evasion that tell you how they are thinking whether they like it or not.
I once tested a set of ads for a putative brand of pipe tobacco called Medallion (never saw the light of day). The marketing men felt that as the sixties were in full swing it was time for a sexy, young brand of pipe tobacco. One of the ads showed a beautiful naked girl in a state of sated unconsciousness, sprawled on black satin sheets, with the medallion on its chain lying near her on the pillow and the slogan 'A girl remembers a man who smokes Medallion' or something similar.
Respondents had the greatest difficulty in deciphering that ad, especially the pipe smokers. Several of these didn't see the satin sheets at all, but thought the girl was flying through the air, with the medallion also flying. They wondered why her eyes were closed. It was absolutely clear that pipe smokers were frightened and intimidated by the real meaning of the ad, so turned it into nonsense. Hilarious.
If the marketing men hadn't been even more obtuse and neurotic than the punters, but all-powerful, I might still be doing market research. It had the potential to be quite interesting.

at the end you have to give your age
unfortunately if you are below 10 or over 80 you are disquallified

My browser kept hanging and I had to stop and restart it a number of times.
I found it interesting trying to guess what the ads were trying to say without their taglines.

I remember that as seeming to be one of marketings best own goals...

I too thought the removal of text from the adverts was interesting. Makes you wonder how good the people behind the ad's were. Without text some are poor aren't they. They get over little info. I can think of lots of BMW adverts that relied on additional text.
