I've had an X Type diesel for a couple of months now, and to be honest its been the worst car owning experience I've ever had. Most of it down to the dealers ineptitude (actually returning the car to me in a dangerous state) but some down to poor build quality and sheer bad luck/
Anyway, I've come to a crossroads. I quite fancy a Ford Focus again. Probably a 2006 plate 1.6 petrol (which will be the same sort of economy as the diesel Jag!)
I reckon my Jag (2004/54 SE with 45k) is worth around £7500 privately, so do you reckon a Ford dealer would be interested in a straight swap for a Focus of the same price?
I've done a swap deal before many moons ago with a backstreet garage, but do main dealers do this sort of deal?

Unlikley as it books at around 6k.

When I was selling cars, swap deals often failed because of unrealistic customer expectations.
There's only been one reply to the OP and it looks like he and the dealer are already £1,500 apart.

Decided our (N reg) 2.5 V6 Mondeo was too costly to run many years ago, although very nice to drive (only V6 we've owned). Unfortunately it was basic spec - didn't actual have a spec name but no alloys, air con etc., and couldn't get any private interest.
In the end practically gave it away to a Citroen dealer in a swap for an (L reg) 8v Cavalier 2.0 :-(

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with the X type and hope you have better luck with the Focus if you get one.
I doubt there`ll be many main dealers prepared to do a straight swop unless the deal is well in their favour, they always like a bit cash.

If you have really taken a scunner to it, I would Sure-Sell it. Quick and easy. Then you have cash for your Focus.

I agree with Humph - although early last year I swapped a 54 plate Seat Toledo 1.6 petrol for an 05 plate Fiat Stilo Multiwagon 1.9JTD. The main Fiat dealer who did the deal valued my Toledo above the price we agreed for the Stilo, therefore I got the Stilo plus a cheque for the difference.
So these swap deals are possible, even at main dealers.

I did use Parkers for some price comparisons, the Focus is 'worth' £6700 with 30k on it (and it has 40k) and my Jag is 'worth' £7700 with 50k on it (and its got 45k on it) So the dealer seems to have overpriced the Focus somewhat.
So I thought I was being realistic - but Parkers seems to have a wide variation on pricing accuracy!

Throw Parkers into the bin. It's rarely even close. At best it's usually £500 or more optimistic for trade-in values and isn't much help in working out if a car for sale is priced correctly or not.
Check out the rest of the market on Autotrader first, I'd say. On cars for sale, take £1500 or so off dealer screen prices to get their trade-in values, more for higher value cars, less for bangers, obviously.

I suppose I'll just have to wait and see when I go along this weekend - shy bairns get nowt!
It looks like I'm expecting too much for the Jag, but the dealer has the Focus well overpriced so there might be a middle ground that pleases both of us!
Ironically, I've just seen an exact copy of my Jag (plate, spec, colour, mileage the lot) for £8999 at a Jag dealer. Way overpriced!
