Whether to buy now or after March 2010 - davidmt83
Hello,

I was hoping people could suggest how much prices of say a 2006 Toyota Yaris might drop by after the new plates are released in March 2010?

For £5500 it looks like I could get a 2006 Yaris 998 cc with around 35k miles.

Also, does anyone know if Toyota are due to release a new model any time soon?

Thank you.

Things other people have raised:

Comment 1:
"At the moment prices for used car are getting stronger all the time after taking a bit of a beating last autumn i'd hazard a guess that the equivalent car in march 2010 will be more expensive"

Comment 2:
"If it was me and i had the money to buy now i'd buy now. We can all speculate about the future and as you've seen no one can agree on whats gonna happen. Even the top bods at all the major manufactures have differing projections on how new car sales are going to go for the next 12months and it will be this as much as anything that dictates used values.

My prediction is that demand will drop a little for new cars from the current level after the halo of scrappage schemes wears off, MFR's will continue to increase prices thus keeping used car values boyant. Also If you looked at the average px currently i expect you'd see a vastly increased number of 10yr old cars and a sharp drop in cars in the 3-4yr bracket. Also most of the short term fleet buyers eg daily rentals etc haven't been renewing their fleet as often again keeping the supply of 1-3yr cars low.

As i said before its anyones guess but we are not talking £1000's here so don't lose too much sleep."

My situation is this:

I own a 2003 Yaris 1.0cc 70k miles which is due an intermediate service. I suspect I'll need new brake discs / pads and I've been quoted ~£300 main dealer + whatever the service is, I suspect ~£180.

Other option is to not bother with getting the stamp (full main dealer up to now), go independant, spend however much it may be, ~£200 at a guess, wait 6 months for the new plate and hope prices of cars I looked at last August (now) will have gone down more than ~£200 ish.

I suppose my car will go down in value as well covering ~5k more miles and adding 6 months to it's age.

It's all relative and as no one really knows I'm starting to think PX now before the service is done is the best financial deal...

Now to picking a reliable, cheap to run and insure, yet still a decent drive, replacement for my current Yaris...

David

I own a Yaris and replaced my own pads and disks (DIY) for £105 parts only).
An indie should be able to do it for £40 labour tops: it's an easy job 1 hour tops..

A 2003 Yaris will easily last to 2013 and do 120k miles + if serviced regularly...

As far as Buy now or later, the BOE are printing money like it's going out of fashion. Some time or other sterling will slide and imported car prices rise...(and all small cars are basically imported)

Why not keep the Yaris?

I can't imagine it's losing you much money, it's reliable, cheap to run and insure and it's a decent drive.

:)

Cheers,

Lou
