Just been reading Mr Snail's thread on Rolls Royce - or is it Rolls-Royce? - and I got to thinking how much I dislike them being called 'Rollers'. Almost as much as I dislike the word 'Jag'. I know genuine enthusiasts call them Royces, because he was the brains. Rolls might have been a toff but he was only the salesman.
Now I know it's early in the morning, but when I tried to put my brain into gear I couldn't, offhand, think of many another makes that have or had their names abused in this way.
Sure, the Model T Ford was called the Tin Lizzy or the Flivver, but that was a model, not a marque.
I could only think of the Subaru 'Scooby' and the Peugeot 'Pug'.
I know I don't read Max Power and the like, but what others are there?

call a roller what you like, (over rated and over priced would do for a start) people of class, genuine old school cads, always had the Bentley

The Cosworth powered Fords were always referred to as "Cossies"

I heard a friend refer to a Ferrari once as a "ra ra" which made me feel physically ill. ;-)

I remember feeling oh so smug on going out to a 'roller' at a vineyard in East Sussex, but I was deflated when I lifted the bonnet and saw the usual SU carbs (huge!) and Lucas dizzy.
The roadtest did absolutely nuffink for me at all.
I have worked on Bentleys ... well ok - one :) quite an old one where you lift up the sides of the bonnet like a Ford Prefect - luvly ole car (complete with SU's and Lucas dizzy) belonged to a Dr. in Sowth Lunden.

Landie - for off road Rovers, By the way the correct pronunciation of South London is "Sarf Lundun", I have only lived in Scotland for 40 odd years so can still speak the SL lingo.

"sowf lundun" if you're Welsh. "sarf lundon" if you actually live there. I did in the 70s and 80s.

Anyone who fancies an old roller should get one on a pit and look underneath the things,
concorde is less complicated.

Sitting outside a cafe on the seafront at Sarfend a few years back, a mate seriously upset the proud owner of a large American motorcycle by referring to it as a Harley Diversion.

Rolls-Royce owners and people in the company, including managers, talk about 'Rollers' so I guess it's OK.

My pet hates are 'Landy' for Land Rover and 'Rangie' for Range Rover - trying to cutsiefy vehicles that are about as uncute as you can get!!

Morgan owners call Morgans 'Moggies'. To me a Moggy is a Morgan, not a Morris Minor.

'Merc' means Mercedes over here, but in America it can also mean a Mercury.

'Vokeswaggon', 'Pewjott' 'Awdi' and 'Rennolt' are some quaint anglicisations we often hear.

I'm old enough to remember the introduction of the orignal Mini (just). The two versions were called the Austin Seven and the Morris Mini-Minor. But people soon started calling them minis and the name stuck and the cars were soon re-badged Austin Mini and Morris Mini.

"He's steering with 'is little hind-legs," said Pyecroft. "Stand up and look at him, Robert. You'll never see such a sight again!"

"Nor don't want to," was our guest's reply. "Five 'undred pounds wouldn't begin to cover 'is fines even since I've been with him."

Park Row is reached by one hill which drops three hundred feet in half a mile. Kysh had the thought to steer with his hand down the abyss, but the manner in which he took the curved bridge at the bottom brought my few remaining hairs much nearer the grave.

"We're in Surrey now; better look out," I said.
