Road tax expiry

Road tax expiry - Doc
A friend is taking delivery of a new car on 4th March.
The current tax runs out at the end of February.
If he 'forgets' to renew the VED on the old vehicle but trades it in on the 4th, will this be picked up by the DVLA?
