The F1 & motorsport thread - Vol 39 - Dynamic Dave

As the title suggests, this thread is for all things Formula One and other general motorsport related stuff.

This is Volume 39.

Usual rules apply. When we get to around 100 posts, the thread will be locked and the next volume will start.

PLEASE NOTE

As with the IHAQ & the Computer threads, When posting a NEW topic, please "Reply to" the first message in this thread, i.e. this one. Proper race - only because it rained.

I expect any race in the dry to be just like the first - a procession

I wonder if Damon is nodding sagely at Michael`s seemingly age related decline?

He was not far off the same age wasn`t he - while winning the title off a younger MS - then in his prime?

I also read somewhere that there might be a move to 1.5 turbocharged four cylinder engines next year.

Perhaps it would be more exciting if they found something really difficult and had no rules at all on capacity, supercharging and so on. how about `one cylinder` and you can do what you want with the rest of the car too.

The pace car would match the downward trend and be powered by the cement mixer engine next door - although it would have to be rev limited - for fear of excess power.

The question I can never find an answer to is - how much does success in F1 depend on the driver and how much on the car?

Any thoughts?

McLaren - F1 Thread - ijws15

I would guess 99% car and 1% driver.

A Lotus is not going to win a race this year no matter who you put in it.

A Red Bull has a chance of winning with any of the drivers in it.

Good question Avant.

Perhaps a one make series would sort the men from the boys with only tweaks to gearing and subtle aerodynamics allowed.

Didn't they start such a series in Saudi Arabia and have teams from countries rather than individuals working for private teams?

At lease it would provide some national pride

Can a moderator not merge this with the unused F1 and Motorsport thread?

www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=82731

Seems there is one. Or are we not having such threads now to keep discussion in one place. It did seem to work for things motorsport related.

If the mods disagree then you'll probably delete this reply to HJ.

Brought this back because there's another GP this Saturday/Sunday and some Backroomers might want to talk about it. F1 was a hot topic in the old Backroom (and thanks to Dynamic Dave for reviving this thread the last time).

Our boys haven't done so well in first practice. Catalyuna is a very tight and difficult circuit. Red Bull has done well. The Spanish love Alonso (of course). And Schumaker is outperforming Niko Rosberg.

The grid is:

Webber

Vettel

Hamilton

Alonso

Button

Schumacher

This used to be a really popular thread. Has everybody with even a slight interest in F1 gone over to the 'Other Place'?

Cheddar was the one for F1. He's been here. But I guess the current denizens aren;t interested.

For the most part this year, no rain = no racing.

Some of us are still interested HJ....but the race wasn't much to talk about was it. For a committed F1 fan to doze off during the race, says it all.

I don't tend to watch Martin Brundle's pit walkabout. I'm usually working, waiting for the race to start. But a mate told me about something that happened on Sunday. It appears that 'The Sugar Babes' has been product-placed in the pitlane and poor old Martin was tasked with the job of getting them some airtime. "Which team do you support," he asked, and got blank looks. "Who's your favourite driver?" After some hesitation, one of them piped up, "isn't he called Button, or something."

Anyway, I was happy with the result. The coolest, most confident driver won.

I`m interested in discussing F1 - but have been out of the country. The last time I did that and posted using my phone there was a mass deletion of my posts.

It`s just that it`s such a chore getting it right with the grammer on the phone - in particular mid sentence capital letters. So decided not to bovver. ;-)

It wasn't quite as bad as that...but they did come across as thick as mince. One of them tried to crack a joke about one of their records that must have 'Button' in the title. It fell dreadfully flat.
