get a maxda mx6, very reliable and nice and quick. You can get a 94 one for under 3500. have a look at www.mx6.com for some for sale.

How about a calibra 4 x 4 turbo? Pretty reliable if looked after and not astronomical mileage. The v6 is possibly a safer bet as the 4 x 4 needs more careful attention. Fairly practical too.
Nissan 300 zx is another possiblity but they are getting on a bit.

300ZX turbos are over £1k each and if it's the turbo it has two. MR2 makes a lot of sense though. MX6 isn't a sports car. A Celica is more of a sports car if you want a coupe. £5k doesn't quite buy a mk II MX5 with glass rear window, but does get a decent mk 1 1.8 (must be 1.8 as catted 1.6 too slow).

I used to own a 1992 MR2 Turbo. Fantastic car. 0-60 5.5 secs. The foglights used to turn with the steering wheel.

Only available as jap import though. Insurance was limited to small number of companies.

Very very complicated in the engine bay. Although nothing went wrong until gf wrapped it round a tree.

Electro hydraulic power steering, extras list a mile long.

A bit tail happy with 220 BHP through the back wheels. Apparently the 1994 on models had revised suspension to make them less tail happy.
