Nissan X-Trail - X-Trail Requires new engine - just out of warranty - LongDriver {P}

I need some help here guys.

Nissan X-Trail, 2007 dCi model, just out of warranty due to mileage (73000 miles), but still under 3 years old.

Originally supplied by Nissan Ireland. (It's a car supermarket vehicle).

Requires new engine due to an injector failure which has resulted in piston, valve and cylinder bore damage.

Nissan GB aren't interested, because they didn't supply the vehicle.

Nissan Ireland aren't sounding like they are going to help in any way at all.

Verhicle has full Nissan dealer service history upto and including last service 1000 miles ago.

Where do I stand legally under European Law with this?

You need someone with clout like HJ on this one.

My X Trail had intercooler/turbo problem 1 month before before 3 year warranty and Nissan did not want to know. Despite letters I got nowhere and my wallet was £1500 lighter.

Great vehicle but Nissan after sales care is carp.

Not all sales companies in the EU have three year warranties. One of the penalties of buying from outside UK.

Sorry, I can't help, but I was wondering how a failed injector could destroy a piston, bore and valve. A friend of mine had to have new injectors and pump on his Peugeot 307 under warranty, but it just produced a lot of smoke and rattling noises. The engine was fine.

Hydraulic lock due to excessive fuel in the cylinder? Not exactly likely - but, nethertheless, possible.

Navara also has a reputation of engines "letting go" and at far less milages than your X Trail !

As a matter of interest, LongDriver, is this the new range of Renault engines, or the old 2.2DCi which had all the turbo issues.

I'm keeping an eye on the new ones, since, if they prove reliable, then the new Xtrail will be on my next shortlist.

the 2.2 engine is a nissan engine, the only problems i had was a leaking intercooler, and a weeping sump plug after a main dealer service, my son has it now with 35k miles.

At present i have the 171bhp 2litre which is a renault engine, the car has been 100% trouble free, revs like a petrol engine and still returns 40 plus mpg, but i still prefer the first xtrail, on the other hand the wife much prefers the new version. however only done 7.5 k miles, engine is nearly run in, so i can now pull 6th gear at 1500rpm, something not possible when new.

It's an 'old shape' with the YD22 Nissan engine.

Currently in dialogue with Nissan Ireland.

Hopefully I won't need to gamble with a Small Claims Court case (which, since January 2009, can be done against companies based in other EU countries via a UK county court), which might be difficult to enforce the judgement of anyway.

Saw the engine block on Friday - burned out valves, piston head wrecked, bore damaged by piston.

Clearly caused by a massive overfuelling resulting from the injector failure. The heat generated by compressive explosion must have been massive, looking at the damage.

An update to this thread...

I was getting nowhere with Nissan and they eventually made me a ludicrous offer of £1000 off a new Nissan vehicle or they would sell me a new engine at cost price, some £5500+. How generous! Not.

I saw red and decided that the time for negotiation was over, so I sent Nissan Ireland a letter outlining my rights provided by EU Directive 1999/44/EC and giving them 10 days to meet their obligations under this Directive.

Result:

5 days after writing the letter, I get an email confirming that I will be provided with a brand new engine and associated parts at Nissan's cost, with me paying for the labour costs (15 hours at my Nissan dealer's rates).

Best result possible I think.

Well done, LongDriver. That's a good result and your persistence has paid off.

And you've got a brand new engine!

I've had TWO new engines fitted to my 56 reg Passat 2.0TDi under warranty (no arguments at all, superb service from local VW dealers who didn't even supply the vehicle) but now the car is out of warranty and I'm a bit apprehensive to say the least.

Out of interest Pat, what failed on the engines?

Out of interest Pat, what failed on the engines?

The first engine failed at 9k miles due oil pump failure (on my 50th birthday!). Second engine went west after 14k (total vehicle mileage 23k) due to the failure of the cambelt tensioner. Apparently I'm just very unlucky!

The car is now on 49k so this engine has reached giddy heights of 26k miles. I just hope it's going to last another couple of years.

Congrats on a good result, pity Nissan hadn`t offered it before sending the letter stating your rights.

I suspect they may have also decided to retreive my engine to examine it to see what actually went wrong, because this doesn't seem to be a reported problem (can't find anything online, unlike the failing Navara engines) and there are rather a lot of YD22 engines out there in various vehcles.

I got a phone call from them this afternoon confirming the arrangements and even suggesting that they may also reimburse me for my car hire costs (although not promising this), even though I hadn't asked for this. Potentially 6-8 weeks hire csts there, so won't turn them down if they insist!

Given that they spent nearly 4 weeks refusing to do anything at all, they suddenly seem very keen on resolving this to my satisfaction!! It may be something to do with me copying my letter to Nissan Ireland's Chairman, or it may have been the potential bad press and probably unrecoverable costs if I took them to Court, of course, but we will probably never know.

If the turbo oil seals fail the sump oil is siphoned up into the injection system and the engine runs on it uncontrollably until it can be stalled or it seizes.

UPDATED: Nissan X-Trail - X-Trail Requires new engine - just out of warranty - LongDriver {P}

Hi HJ,

No sign of any problems in the other three cylinders (when it was dismantled) or any strange turbo behaviour when the injector failed - big puff of smoke from the exhaust and then ran like it had a misfire on cylinder 1.

It took me about half a mile to get from lane 3 to the hard shoulder in fast heavy traffic and continued to run with a misfire until I turned the ignition off.

Nissan technicians initally thought it was a carbon build-up in cylinder 1 and were amazed to see the damage when they took the head off. Burned out valves, damaged piston head, badly scored cylinder bore. The piston in cylinder 1 hasn't been taken out, but I'm guessing that the con rod will not be very straight - the damage suggested a massive explosion or large heat generation in cylinder 1.

Still not got my car back as the engine hasn't arrived yet.

Car hire has passed £1000 and my first cheque from Nissan is coming next week.

I had a Nissan Almera whose gearbox died- a bearing went rendering it more or less useless- just after the manufacturer's warranty ran out bur fortunately had an extra six months from the dealer. These faults, unless a car has been badly abused or not serviced, shouldn't occur on cars so recent and thankfully in both mine and the OP's situation these have been remedied without huge expense. Yet the inconvenience and the lack of confidence thereafter in a particular make of car- I won't be buying Nissan again after this- shouldn't happen and the drivetrain should last at least 100,000 miles. Otherwise we are going back to the old days when cars used to fall apart after 3 years and getting more than 10 years out of them was very rare. I thought the old problems had largely been beaten by the mid nineties, but in some cases modern cars are becoming about as durable as a seventies Lancia.

Got my car back this afternoon after NINE WEEKS!

Total cost to me: £1330, less £128 Quidco cashback on my car hire and £12 on the excess cover

Value of what Nissan paid for = £8678 approx, comprising:

Engine: £5500 (cost price as previously advised by Nissan)

Fuel Pump :£1842 (retail price)

Car Hire: £1280 (inc 20% discount arranged by me)

Excess Cover: £56

...plus aircon re-gassing, service parts, full showroom valet!

Hi good to see you got sorted, did the injector or engine show any problems before it gave up? I have a 2.2di with what sounds like pinking when accelarating between 2-2500 rpm. Hoping its not caused by an injector fault.

thanks herald.

UPDATED: Nissan X-Trail - X-Trail Requires new engine - just out of warranty - LongDriver {P}

No pre-warning at all.

It had been serviced (72,000 miles) a couple of weeks before and I had just put new Pirelli Scorpion tyres on all four corners - sods law I had actually commented a few days earlier that it was driving like a new car!

I had just pulled onto the M6 at Carlisle and got up to cruising speed.

Sudden loss of power. Cloud of smoke/unburnt diesel out of the back. Turned into a 3 cylinder engine. Onto hard shoulder. The end.

Repairs and car hire came to more than the car was worth (3yrs old Aventura/Columbia spec level 2.2DCi, 73000 miles), so it beats me why Nissan didn't try to buy the car off me rather than mess about like they have!

But now I have a 3 year old car with most of a brand new engine and still upto 2 years warranty on the original turbo that's still in there.

It has previously had intercooler and fuel pump replaced under warranty.
