VW Golf 1.4 TSI 140 - High mileage something to worry about? - MICHIEA

Hi, I'm looking at the below ad, and wondering if anyone would be able to advise whether to worry about the high mileage?

Has the turbo/supercharger been known to fail?
Any high cost repairs that could hit as the miles rack up?

Thanks

The theory is good: Chain cam engine, watercooled turbo. And clocking up the miles quickly is good for the car. Will depend on how frequently it has been serviced. Possibly only every 20k miles. That will mean roughly every 6 months, so isn't like leaving a service for 2 years. But with the turbo and the supercharger and the timing cvhain, this engine is going to like clean oil.

The 1.4 TSI hadn`t long been out when I bought my new Golf 2.0 diesel and remember the VW salesman joking about the perceived longevity of `the little engine with a s/charger and turbo` .

But what do salesmen know ?

These engines haven't been around long enough to have proven themselves at higher mileages.

I'm sure that the fundamental idea is OK, but look at what happened when diesels first went common-rail. These petrol engines are similarly complex -- do you want to be the guinea pig?

Is a saving of a few hundred quid a year -- at most -- in petrol worth it over a standard 2.0 litre engine? Seems to me that you'd be taking £1000 of your budget and putting it on black.

I would buy something with a well proven engine for now, and watch those 1.4TSI engines while they rack up big mileages, to see if any problems develop. The engine may have strong internals and remain reliable, but ancillaries such as turbo's, superchargers normally only have a finite life. Remember the VW G-lader supercharged engines in the Corrado? Good torque and power, but nasty rebuild costs when the supercharger went wrong.

The latest superchargers might be better, but I wouldn't want to have to replace this at high mileage, then be stuck with a bill for a new turbo as well. Best to see how this one develops. Or buy one with a cast iron warranty.
