Bought new car from this company 4 yrs ago and now notice their web site now seems to be closed down. Does anyone know if they are still in operation?

I am fairly certain that a dealer called Motor Provider had a site just off Junction 29 of the M1 - the Chesterfield exit.

One day last week, I glanced over for another look at a red MR2 that had been staring at me for a couple of days and blow me if the premises weren't completely cleared out, bare and deserted. They didn't even leave the MR2!

They obviously shut down very quickly with no contact details either at their site or the closed website. I found the service trouble free but I was buying a new car 4 yrs ago. Only problem I found was the car was registed a week or so before i picked it up but the manufacturers warrany runs from the date of manufacture when sold to non franchised dealer so i lost 3 months on 3yr warranty.

The information we have would also suggest that this company is no longer trading. I will ask HJ to have a look at this thread on Monday and see whether he can offer any advice.

Anyone burned by this should check what they can do with asklucy@honestjohn.co.uk . I guess a liquidator has been appointed, but customers always come last on the list behind HMRC and the banks.

We have had formal notification from the official receivers that Motorprovider have gone into administration. There is a help desk number for enquiries that is 0114 275 5033.

No, they don't. That used to be the case but HMRC is just treated like any other creditor now.

I clicked onto an IE bookmark for the old motorprovider site and was redirected to :

http://www.carprovider.co.uk/index.php

The site seems to be exactly the same format as the old motorprovider. Is there any way I can check out if it is just the old company owners trading under a different name. The prices at first glance seem quite competitive.

"Car Provider Ltd" appears to have a Sheffield address.

You need to do a company search on both and check for commonality of directors.

However even if they share them the new company will be a separate legal entity to the old.

Just noticed that in their "about us" page there is a reference to Motorprovider which they have probably forgot to edit out and replace with car provider. I found the service ok last time i used them 4 yrs ago but now I would advise using a credit card to pay the deposit and only transfer the balance on the day of collection with the new car physically in front of you or you could find yourself out of pocket like some other poor folk.

A query re. this for LucyBC or other legal eagles - if a car was paid for with CC for deposit and the balance paid on collection, what trouble would there be if the broker didn't pay their supplier for the vehicle.

I believe with finance, if you have received the good in good faith and the supplier did not pay their supplier you'd keep the goods - I presume this is not quite so true for a cash sale?

HP is one of the few instances where you can develop good title. It does not apply to other forms of finance.

A credit card (but not a debit card) affords you additional protection (particularly in respect of deposit) if the goods are not delivered.
