Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dci 2007 - Big End Problem with 2007 Qashqai Diesel ! - Winelad

My QQ is just under 4 year old with 60,000 on clock . Tonight , all of a sudden it developed a really loud rattle and lost power . On tickover it is like a very noisy tappet - but has more of a clunking noise when I rev it .A freind of mine thinks its a big end problem !!! Could this be so ? I'm dreading the visit to the garage tomorrow and probably news of a horrible bill !!!Any help please ?

Alan

Have you checked the oil?

Could be big ends but a faulty injector will cause a similar noise. Does your oil light come on?

I with Peter.n

Faulty injector will make hell of a banging noise ! sounds just like a big end gone !

I would contact a diesel specialist

Update for everyone (apologies - having problems posting for some reason ) . The damage was the worst - timing belt had frayed , timing had jumped and massive internal damage . New engine being quoted at £5,900 !!! The dealership is helping me with a claim to Nissan as the servicebook suggests belt change/inspection at 5 year/75k ....my car is 4 yr on 60k . Oil levels were fine , no warning lights were showing ~ up until last week I was actually getting 56 mpg which I was very pleased with so obviously mechanically it was fine until last Wednesday . First 3 years all servicing was done at dealership whilst under warranty , my "worry" is that this summer (for convenience) I had my oil change at my local Kwikfit - but I'm hoping that does not affect things ? Fingers crossed I get the right phone call or my car is a gonner !!

Saw this - if you get stuck with it.

Might be cheaper to get it fitted elsewhere. £5900 is a bad joke.

Thanks everyone ....after 4 "perfect" years I am no longer the owner of a Nissan Qashqai .On 60,000 miles the timing belt had frayed , it jumped whilst I was driving the 20 miles home damaging con rod , blowing a piston head , bending valves and basically requiring a full new engine for just shy of £6,000 .My local Benfield Motors , from whom I bought the car have been great fighting my corner . Eventually Nissan agreed to pay 60% parts and 20% of the labour - still leaving me with a £3,500 bill for previous labour and new engine in a 4 year old car . Instead I have opted to part ex the car to Benfield and on Monday I'm taking delivery of a Renault Megane 1.5 dci instead . 1 year older than mine but 16k less on the clock and "top of the range" . Hey - put this one down to experience - thanks again everyone for your help . Alan .

Don`t like Nissan or their vehicles after reading about the poor begger who had to start his own site `Knackered Navara`. com to try and get some positive help from Nissan with the undeniable faults the vehicles had.

These `Kashcows` certainly seem to have plenty issues too !

Lets face it the main stream models are just badged up renaults and have all the problems the renaults are renowned for.

Wife's 2007 1.6 petrol Visia Qashqai is still doing well, no problems there.

My 6 week old Renault Megane 1.5dci 110 is giving me no end of problems. Bits of trim falling off, engine sounding like a bag of spanners, mpg of less than 45 on the combined cycle, lack of torque - driving along a motorway at say 70-75 mph come to a long climb ( not particularly steep ) and you are having to be down to 3rd or 4th by the top of the incline speed having dropped to 35ish.
Having said that the car is fantastic when it goes right, I.e. Keeping power on through twisty A and B roads, handles far superior to the new focus or golf IMO. and Im an ex circuit racer.

Sadly with 2300 miles in 6 weeks the mechanical and build problems are letting a very very good car down.

Going by the symptoms - sadly it sounds like you bought a Renault.

Does anyone know if this problem is still occuring with the 1.5 dci, I have 2013 version with the same symptoms. Workshop supervisor at garage told me there is nothing wrong but compared to my previous Fords it sounds like a tin full of ball bearings during running at no particular speed, just at random. 40k on the clock and just passed it's 3rd birthday and obviously due to the short nature of Nissan warranties is now not covered.

Its about time they made the top half of timing belt covers easier to take off so you can check the belt instead of taking off front wheels , wheel arch covers ect.
