Just wondered if there was a best time of year to buy vehicles.
I would never dream of trying to sell a motorbike in winter for example!
Before or after Christmas? Start of the new financial year in April?

I would say the best time to buy a van is when you need a van :)
|
|
If you're buying an older van make sure it isn't a Euro III that's banned from London (unless you pay a daily charge). There's a flood of non-emissions compliant vans on the market at the moment - of course Euro IV vehicles have firmed up price-wise.
Big companies generally lease their vans and lorries – as usual the small man on the street gets stiffed and the rich get richer. How many small businesses will go out of business because of this law?

:-D cheers Jamie - I have the cash ready and waiting, and could find a use for a van tomorrow. (I'm a sparky) But I'm putting it off till the last minute...
Steve, good point about Euro III vans, thank you.

There's an 04 Vauxhall Combo 1.7 TD (Euro IV) taxed and MOTed going for £900 near me. 55mpg. Ex fleet and now owned by the transport manager privately. High mileage but mechnically sound as it had an engine and gearbox rebuild 6 months ago. Well worth a punt.

Tempted but I'm after a Hiace sized van! Transporters are ridiculous money and I fancy a bit of that Hilux reliability...

Check how much the insurance will be.
Would you not be better off with an estate ?
|
|
Insurance is horrific, £800 TPFT but what can I do besides drive illegally, if I get a small van or estate I will outgrow it in a year if that.
More costs to pass on to clients, brilliant.
The only other idea I had was an old MPV with the seats taken out.

Go for a VW Caravelle, they are taxed and treated as a car. They are just as big inside as a van, take out the seats, cover up the windows and off you go. Or go for something like a Citroen Berlingo Renault Kangoo MPV

Good idea, I have a soft spot for VeeDubs (Although a shame for it to get used and abused as a work van!)

I've been looking at a few on EBAY, check these ones out. 140607845146 330615137169I'd have either of these in a hearbeat if I could possibly justify it to the MRS . . .

Van insurance can be alot more than a car, estate car or MPV where the seats fold flat can be just as useful with even business insurance on it being much less.

When I was a pup, quite a few lads bought vans instead of cars coz the insurance cost half - what happened?

Young lads started crashing vans instead of cars.
:)

Well, insurance on MPV's is about half the price! A SEAT Alhambra is only £500 TPFT.
If the rear is gutted of seats etc, will these hold as much as a van?
|
|
Seat Alhambra? Thats pretty much the size of a Galaxy isnt it. Take all the rear seats out and there'd be more room than a Transit Connect.
|
|
Easier loading than some vans too, side doors both sides.
Not sure if it would have as much load area as a real van though! Are MPV floorpans flat, as in vans, or covered in mouldings?
|
|
Most of them are flat if you take the seats out.
Is it worth shopping around for van insurance? If it were really as bad as that wouldn't more tradesmen be driving MPVs rather than vans?

If you've got a healthy no claims you can still get well priced van insurance, and a clean well maintained van holds its value well. If they work as subcontractors to do work for big firms usually a condition is they must have a van within a certain age limit, no older than 5 years usually so by not having a van they exclude themselves from about 50% of the work opportunities out there.

|
I am in the worst position of being PAYE and not entitled to any tax relief, and not getting any fuel vehicle allowance from my employer.
So a stripped out MPV would work just fine until I can go self-employed.

Well Hideous Vapid Shysters or "Financial institutions" bought up all the insurance companies and now try and squeeze every last shekel out of all their customers, to line their pockets. Thats what happened . . . \that plus NuLabour introduced no blame no claim legislation to provide a nice little earner for their lawyer friends .. . . now we are living with the result of this rotten cocktail.
