Audi A4 All Road - Audi TDi engine - Ed V

A friend of mine has a newish A4 Estate All Road Automatic, and says he finds the diesel nothing like as responsive as the previous 2 litre petrol he had on an A6.

Anyone know anything about the 3.0 TDi?

Should be a rocket-ship..

Maybe it isn't runing correctly ?

From 1500-3000 RPM, it should be at least equal to the petrol. It'll be a bit soggy at low speed, and breathless at higher RPM but in the middle, it should be, as roly says, like a rocket.

If the 2 litre petrol is the excellent TFSi 200bhp engine then by comparison the diesel will be a bit of a sluggard. Even with the diesel's mid range torque the petrol will be livelier and much more responsive.

Sure its not the 2.0 TDi ?

You can have an A4 with the 3.0 TDI engine. If it's an automatic, as it probably is, step-off from rest is never going to be as immediate as with a manual (or a petrol auto) - as automatics start off from idling speed, whereas with a manual you rev it a litle to, say,1500 rpm to get going.

Also diesels take the best part of 10,000 miles to loosen up fully.

Of course you can and it would have quite awesome power from new and is why I offered the suggestion it may be a 2.0.

Sorry - I see what you mean. But I had a much-loved A4 Avant 2.5 TDI with multitronic and it was quite leisurely off the mark until it had done several thousand miles.

I had a new All Road 2.5 TDI manual which was always quick

Would that be due to the engine 'loosening up' or the ECU/auto trans learning your driver habits via 'fuzzy logic'?

auto trans learning your driver habits via 'fuzzy logic

There are two modes in modern autos: 'eco' and 'sport'. If the former is too pedestrian, use the latter. I think the fuzzy logic is a gimmick. The 'fuzziness' is based upon what is in happening in front of the car, which the gearbox can't see. Sometimes you want a sharp kickdown, sometimes you don't. Acceleration patterns are chaotic and cannot be learned or predicted.

Fair enough.

I remember when I had my mazda 6 auto. I was getting 35-37mpg on a 220 mile trip when I first got it.

A few weeks later I was getting 38-40mpg with same conditions/luggage/tire pressure. I mentioned this to my local mechanic who then mentioned the idea of 'fuzzy logic'; never really fully understood it though

This was a good car but I drove an A4 2.7 tdi and this was awesome and I have heard the 3.0 TDI is significantly better still.

My 3.0TDI 171kw is in an A8L, not so heavy as it looks due to being aluminium, but it is fast off the mark and the opposite of OP's description.
No idea if it was remapped by the original company owner though.

I think the OP was referring to the 2.0 TDI and was wondering if the 3.0 was worth the extra expense.

I have to say that, given the mimserish driving that is endemic these days, I find the idea that so many people think their cars are underpowered rather amusing.

If I'm finding it difficult to 'excercise' my wheezing 16 year old 90 hp engine, how are people with 150+hp struggling with lack of power??

You know as well as I do, cars are heavier now than they were 16 years ago. A current model Corsa is heavier than a Mk4 Astra, which is heavier than a Cavalier.

The Cavalier SRI130 went very, very well. An Insignia with the better performing 1.8VVT at 140hp goes like a dead slug on sand.

I factored that in ChannelZ. I still think that in horse power/ton, there are a lot of 'underpowered' cars that are not doing too badly.

The fact that the car doesn't accelerate from 1500 RPM in top is more of an indictment of the driver's gear changing skills than it is of the car.

I wonder if they know what 150 hp feels like!

ALlow 10% losses for 4wd.
