Ford Escort Diesel 1997 - Belt squeal in the morning / cold engine - Englishbullterrier

Hi all, just had the alternator removed/refitted (with a new belt) after I refurbed/fixed it. (I don't currently have the ability to get underneath it).

This car has a/c so the compressor was also dropped (but not disconnected) to get to the alternator.

Now, in the morning, it's developed quite a loud belt squeal. This disappears if I rev the engine (blip it really) for a short while.

Can someone advise if this normally indicates a loose or too tight belt ?

Many thanks all..........ebt

It often indicates a loose or worn belt but the problem may be caused by a tight bearing either in the alternator or something else contacting the belt. Try putting some WD40 on the belt and see if that clears the problem, if it does it's the belt slipped rather than a bearing, if the WD40 doesn't help then it's likely to be a mechanical issue elsewhere.

A lad at work has had exactly the same problem with his W plate 1.8 diesel Escort for ages and renewed and kept tightening belt which didn`t work and eventually snapped the alternator bracket.Belt and bracket changed noise stopped.

Those 1.8D engines ford made in the 80s and 90s all seem to suffer from that squeaky problem. I don`t think that anything can be done about it as it seems just to be a characteristic of the engine.

I wouldn't have thought putting WD40 on the belt is such a good idea, it's a lubricant, not much of one, but it's a lubricant all the same.

The WD40 acts as a temporary lubricant, it soon clears completely off the belt, it works just long enough to see if it's the belt or a mechanic issue that's causing the noise.

WD40 is oily - not good for belts! I have an ancient can of Grako Sprazon belt dressing which I use every 10,000m or so at my inspection service. I only ever change belts if something they drive fails, and they have to come off anyway [e.g a Passat GL5 water pump at around 130,000, if I remember correctly]. My record was 242,000m for a GL 2.0 petrol Passat - belt still going strong, engine not wearing as well, but still less than 1l per 1000km oil consumption.

I can't understand why belt inspection and dressing is not recommended - it's far cheaper than replacing a belt which I guess usually looks almost as good as new. Mine do - 118,000 on a 14yr old Audi V6 and 82,000 on a 12 yr old Focus 1.6.

If it works don't mend it! .

Thats just what is not ,spraying wd40 or variants as described is the correct way to proceed.
