All New Cars - How many new cars are built to order? - woollyeyes

Hi All

I am trying to find out how many of the approximate new cars sold each year of 2 million are build to customers orders at the factory or are sold from stock?

The good old days with fields of new cars in stock seem to be well and truly over.

It seems any car you want will take 3 or 4 months before you cant get it, does that sound right?

Have not been able to find any statics on what the split is, does anyone know of any?

Regards

There will never be a definite split because both dealers and manufacturers will order specific option variants but if a customer happens to want that specification then they'll take over the factory order for that car - and conversely if a customer-specific car is ordered it may well be carried into production even if the customer cancels.

It's good economics for manufacturers to move away from "sell from stock" to "sell to order" and different brands have widely differing policies on this but factory lead times have generally extended as the industry has shed it's excess capacity.

My last two new cars have been built to order - a Vauxhall Astra in 2000 because of the option combination and a Hyundai Santa Fe in 2011 because of low stocks in the UK supply chain. Despite 6 weeks on a boat, the Hyundai was delivered in 10 weeks.

I recently bought a new car, and was told by the dealer that I had a limited choice of just a few colours. It took a couple of weeks to be transported to the dealers, and judging by the surface rust underneath, had been sitting in a yard for some time.

Most Japanese (and other Asian) cars are built to stock, rather than order because of the shipping times involved.

When I bought my MX-5 it was shipped from the Netherlands, which is where the central stock is held - so about 10 day lead time.

That wasn't my experience last year when buying my Santa Fe - the manual/automatic split is about 50:50 on that model and while every colour & trim combination was available from UK stock for the manual there was nothing unsold at all for automatics - even those on weekly boats in transit from Korea were already sold.

My 520d was built to order in May.

I asked if I chose a different colour could I get it sooner and the lease company said no as they are all built to order.

Having said that it was 6 weeks from order to delivery so not too bad.

Recently got a new 520d SE from stock in 6 days for the company. Didn't have to compromise on spec or colour, just waved cash under a dealer's nose.

One of the cars I bought recently was "built to order" but only because I wanted an unusual spec-ie. not a common one-took about three months.I would normally go into my favoured dealer and see what they have. For example, the last car I bought,I could have the colour I wanted in three weeks from the cars they had already ordered from the manufacturer but if I settled for black,it was available at the dealer-two days.I bought black.

It's quite common (from reader's complaints) for a new car bult to order to arrive with bits missing, either from the 'standard' spec or from the list of options the customer ordered. The reason is that, however efficient the production process is, sometimes bits don't arrive 'just in time' and the production line cannot be held up, so the car is built without them. The customer then gets the option of taking the car as it arrives (at a discount) or waiting for another car to be built.

I didn't realise that British Leyland was still in production!

Seriously, it's ridiculous that it still happens at all and it's a criminal use of IT software which has been designed to avoid this sort of thing and has been in commonplace usage since the 1970's.

Whether it's common I don't know - it's certainly never happened on any of my new cars since 1980.

Alas I've experienced this twice in recent years. The Honda dealer had the good grace to tell me beforehand and we managed to sort it out but it took a couple of months before I had the car I ordered. The root cause was good old fashioned incompetance, the wrong boxes ticked when transcribing the order.

Toyota's dealer tried to cover up the fact that my wife's Yaris had arrived without several paid for features and we ended up in acrimony and litigation. We never found out the root cause as all we got was obfuscation, lies and deceit from various members of the franchise. It was a horrible, unreliable car to boot, that just rubbed salt in.

Very little to do with IT systems, everything to do with the way you run a business. It is there to support the business not dictate how you run it or how you treat your customers, "it's the computer...." and its variants are just lame excuses for poor business practice.

I hope my wife's new company car - A Suzuki Alto- isn't built to order, as the workforce have just tried to burn down the factory in India.
I was promised delivery in August (after the couldn't find a red one for July delivery but could for a month later..) that was two weeks ago - so if it's not in stock who knows when it will arrive (and whether it will be a non smoker!)

At least Red Robbo and co never burnt down Longbridge.
