Ford Ka or Toyota Yaris? - anthonyf
As a cheap and cheerful runabout bought used? My inclination is to go for the Yaris as it has a chain cam but I could be persuaded otherwise. Did also consider a Fiat Panda but they look even flimsier than these two. Any thoughts?

The lower the price you're paying, the more condition matters rather than make or model. Try to find something the size you want which appears to have been looked after and regularly serviced.

That said, old Toyotas go soldiering on for a a long time so a Yaris could be worth looking at - go for the 1.3 if possible.

EVERY Ford KA ever built is "chain cam".

Every petrol but not diesel having said that I would sooner change a belt than a chain.

Ford Ka or Toyota Yaris? - Honestjohn

All old model KAs were chain cam: original pushrod 1.3, later ohc 1.3 and later ohc 1.6. The current model KAs have FIAT belt cam petrol engines or FIAT chain cam diesel engines.

1.6 OHC only fitted to StreetKa & SportKa.

Kas rust badly. Yaris do not.

Thanks everyone for taking the trouble to reply to my question. All I have to do now is find a suitable Yaris as that's what I will look for.

Someone mentioned a Penda. Nothing wrong with them either. Very reliable and more roomy that the Ka or Yaris.

I own a 2009, new shape, KA. 55mpg attainable, no problems in 3 years, cheap insurance and servicing, low road tax.

Rev counter with no red line (what's the point then?). Rear seats don't fold flat. No spare wheel, not even a space saver, no rheostat for panel lights. Instruments hard to read some of the time then too bright with lights on (see rheostat comment). Expensive for what it is, I got mine on the scrappage scheme so fair price.

Lots of low mileage Yaris

Indeed but the little FIAT petrol engines are safe "non interferance" engines, if the cam belt breaks - the engine just stops - no harm done.

Ford Ka or Toyota Yaris? - Honestjohn

Sadly, no. The original 999cc FIAT 'FIRE' engines were non interference. The 1,242 engine currently fitted isn't. at least according to the charming FIAT engine man I sat next to at dinner on the MiTi MultiAir launch a couple of years ago.

Ford Ka or Toyota Yaris? - davecooper

It depends how much space you need and how many doors. I have always believed the Yaris to be in the Fiesta/Corsa category with the Ka being Sub Supermini and 3 door only.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I thought that only applied to the 16valve engines,

Ka's are for girls, Yarisses are for their ugly, but older and wiser sisters.

Fiat Pandas are for Gay Men, as are Smart Cars.

A Fiat Punto would be ok but a bit cheap.

A Vauxhall Corsa could be a good choice as it is a good car, free from all stereotypes.
