Seems very quiet these days. Where has everyone gone? I used to post regularly, but got fed up of the endemic pedantry and petty moderation and went elsewhere.

Looks like I am not the only one!

This Forum - FP

It is not "approved" to name on here the site to which some Back-Roomers migrated a while back.

Do a Google search for "Motoring Forums". It's about the sixth one down. Just below Honest John (!).

Mind you, some members post on both sites.

Thanks.

I guess the success of Pistonheadscan't have helped this place, either.

This Forum - Avant

A warm welcome back, Bradgate. You're right - the previous moderators were somewhat over-zealous, and we are more easygoing now, although we still need to suppress personal insults from time to time when a poster gets carried away.

We don't name other forums on here to avoid a situation where members of one forum criticise another. There is as FP says another forum where some of our erstwhile regulars visit: it's more of a chatroom and none the worse for that, and we are not in competition. This is more of a place where (often directed from th HJ website) people come to ask advice on motoring issues, although we have discussion too. I and others post on more than one forum.

My understanding is that a year or two ago this site went down for a prolonged time, due to a upgrade that had unforeseen problems, and since the forum was AWOL the regulars migrated to a new forum which uses the old HJ software. If you want to join a small clique of people, then the other forum is the place to be. I also had a feeling HJ did not like his forum being used as a chat room, rather than a car discussion forum, although that is supposition on my part. The other forum does not suffer the horrible pop up adverts, but lacks the good reviews and news.

This Forum - No FM2R II

>>The other forum does not suffer the horrible pop up adverts

Interestingly I realise I don't get pop-up adverts here either. If I'm stopping them, I'm not doing it on purpose.

This Forum - Smileyman

This forum still causes internet explorer to crash ... forcing me to use a different browser or not bother looking

This Forum - madf

I post on both forums. This one is invaluable for reviews. The other is more chatty...

Never had any pop up/IE problems.

This Forum - Fernando P

But HJ (Technical Matters) is the place to search for good advice from technically literate advisers.

This Forum - Honestjohn

I think all the problems stem from a Fox subsite that has conflicts with various Microsoft IE adblockers. We took it down for a few days and the problems pretty much disappeared. They said they resolved the conflict, so it's now back. But the issue is not yet fully resolved. From memory it was a Fox subsite that made the site either freeze or become very slow to load in Internet cafes some years ago. The problem is, it's an income stream. But if the issue cannot be resolved we will have to drop Fox for the sake of the other income streams.

Please remember, this is primarily a website and a business. It is not a hoby site. It is not primarily a forum. Forums, chatrooms, whatever you want to call them are excellent at generating numbers, but not income from click-thtroughs. And if forums are unmoderated, as Avant wisely writes, people can post all kinds of things that ultimately could leave the site liable. So we would rather sacrifice mass numbers than simply go for volume. Everyone who understands that remains very welcome.

Interesting to hear this as I thought it was just my browser that kept getting horribly locked up by this site until recently.

This Forum - ChannelZ

The forum software here is like something from the early 90's. HJ needs to go to something like phpBB or vBulletin - something that works properly. Quoting is a minefield here, and it doesn't work properly with IE.

This Forum - Honestjohn

As mentioned in this thread: www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=96964 The issue with the Fox subsite and Microsoft IE adbockers should now finally have been resolved.

It's the holiday/vacation season. The coastly beaches & tourist spots were packed over the sunny weekend with people enjoying their slow drive whilst listening to the sound of prolonged 1st gear & stop start driving.

Once people come back from vacation no doubt there will be plenty of issues coming up on the forum for people to chat about.

This Forum - jamie745

This forum doesn't like humour or anything edgy. If you dare to state facts your posts get butchered.

This Forum - No FM2R II

>>If you dare to state facts your posts get butchered.

The implication being that, as it hasn't been butchered, that statement isn't a fact then?

This Forum - Avant

Don't worry, NoFM2R - Jamie knows perfectly well that that isn't true. Things that get the virtual blue pencil out are mainly personal insults, unhelpfulness to new posters and any naming and shaming which could leave us open to threats of legal action. Statements of actual fact are of course not libellous and don't get censored.

We have recently had to hide some threads about Warranty Direct, although in fairness they made a polite request rather than a threat.

Just to remind everyone that if you have comments on the moderation of the forum, please address them to moderators@honestjohn.co.uk.

This Forum - jamie745

What happened to freedom of speech? Or does Warranty Direct own that as well?

This Forum - No FM2R II

Avant, if I may butt in...

>>What happened to freedom of speech?

Its alive and well and having a party on any computer that you pay for, or on any computer that sets itself up as such.

When did you decide you had the right to treat someone else's computer (or internet site as you wish and then complain when they don't like it?

I may not always agree with HJ, but he's pretty clear and rightfully so - this is not a hobby, this is not a playground, its a business and its his business. And since its also his money I suggest you respect his preferences or exercise your inalienable right to naff off and do it your way on your computer.

Why visit somewhere just to complain that you don't like it? When I disagree sufficiently, I go away. When I want, I come back. I don't expect this site, or HJ, to change to suit me any more than I would change to suit them.

And I don't mean to be OTT, but I hate the way this world has got where everybody thinks they have some right to comment on how someone else chooses to spend their money and that the other person MUST listen and change.

How about you appreciate the facility that this site provides and in gratitude go along with their parameters?

You should be grateful that Avant is pleasant and continues to tolerate you despite the work you cause him. There used to be a right fascist here who would not tolerate such additional effort as pleasantly as Avant does..

Avant/HJ - feel free to delete. I feel better now.

This Forum - Roly93

Definately spoke well too soon here, the forum is still horribly locking my browser up presently.

HJ

I tend to agree with HJ here. but, sometimes the posts are overmoderated, or have been in the past, so is it ok if i say "my local dealer is crap" but I cannot say who and where, but i can name a dealer for excellent service. ??? for those who know my cars, I am currently discussing with the people about the non-availability of service parts for the range of cars that are sold here, and those parts cover a range of those cars. Yes, the site has been very informative but ultimately if it is not going to allow honest comment that can be proved, then it will self defeat in the end. For the other comments about warranty direct, at least when i enquired and told them about a botched main dealer oil change they said they would not provide cover, To all the people who buy policies, READ the thing and understand what you are buying, and realise that any "free" 3 month policy will not come from WD, and will not be worth the paper it is printed on. And HJ, thanks for your comments in reply to 2 recent queries.

Happy motoring to all, (jamie included) (and well done for the jag, )

Thanks for the support, NoFM2R.. I'm consulting HJ about clarifying our name-and-shame policy. As always, ORB, your point is perfectly reasonable and I hope to come back with clarification.

This Forum - jamie745

Oh what a load of reactionary cobblers. Just put a disclaimer box on the Forum side which says 'opinions expressed here are not those of Honest John or related...' blah blah blah if it really bothers you that much.

This Forum - No FM2R II

Why should they change their site because you think its better?

Why don't you change your behaviour to fit the rules in THEIR place?

It doesn't really atter whether or not you like it, its not yours. But you could try a little respect for someone else's property and business.

You're outraged that you consider your rights are not valued, but you don't value anyone else's

Maybe you know that and maybe you understand that; and perhaps you just don't care. Or maybe you just don't have the wit and its beyond you.

Anyway, enough is enough, no doubt you'll do as you please.

This Forum - Honestjohn

Thank you, No FM2R II. Your support is greatly appreciated. Someone used to say that The Backroom is like a pub where friends meet, chat, share information, advise and argue. They don't have to share the opinions of the landlord. But if what they say or do gets out of hand, or endangers the licence of the pub, the landlord retains the right to ask them to leave (edit their posts), or bar them from the pub.

Well given that it is a business, if i don't like the way thay business is going, and that business is making money out of me, then i am free to take my custom elsewhere, and will.

ORB.

Happy motoring to all.

This Forum - Honestjohn

ORB, please kindly explain how the business is making money out of you? If only makes money out of you if you click through to the advertisers. Like a pub, it doesn't make money from you merely coming in through the door.

Really? Do they put you in jail if you oppose the management?

The kind of OTT repsonse which ruins any argument.

This Forum - gordonbennet

For crying out loud whats the problem, we are asked by the gaffer not to name and shame, its not too much to ask is it?

This Forum - Avant

Thanks, GB. We are going to clarify the naming-and-shaming issue, as I've said above - I thought quite clearIy. I have drafted a policy on this which we'll have checked by a lawyer.

I'm sure most reasonable people understand that in this very litigious age a public forum has to be very careful.

This Forum - Xileno

Most websites seem to already have a lengthy legal document on display. Something generic must exist without involving a lawyer.

No FM2R / Mark (RLBS) whatever he calls himself these days wrote these fine words when this issue last raised its head in December 2004, as I'm sure he will remember.

As a statement of a moderator's policy it's excellent, and more or less what I try to do myself. But I think it would be helpful to have a policy drafted as guidance for our members.

Ultimately it'a a matter of reasonableness and common sense, as most of us well understand.

This Forum - Xileno

A minor tweek I would recommend is to have it more obvious how to get in touch with the Moderator(s). The 'Report as Offensive' facility was put in following an incident some years ago but you need to be a member to use it. A lot of people are 'lurkers'. I'm sure on the old site it was easier to find how to get in touch with the Moderators. I think it was a 'sticky' thread written by one of the team. Just my thoughts...

It's very easy to get in touch with the moderators, as I often say, and indeed said halfway up this very thread.

I wonder if I might tentatively suggest that HJ introduces a 'like/ dislike' tick box for postings, if that is possible? It might give support to the sensible courteous debaters - who might well disagree with each other but do so without rancour - and indicate toothers that their manners need to improve and/or their opinions are way out of line! There must be a good few like me who often dip in and out of this forum but don't actually post that much.

Quite easy, if you don't like it, don't post / don't view.

I find the appalling English a pain but I still come back because it's marginally better here than the rest of the Interweb thingy.

I noticed that.

But said nothing, assuming they'd been promoted to the mobility scooters forums, it must come to us all.
