Worth a read but I doubt people\'s opinions count!

The swear filter has taken out the \'o\' and the \'d\'.

I hope that the moderators do not delete this thread as it is a 100% valid site for those who think that the CC is bad legislation

[I corrected the link for you. I won\'t delete the thread, although when I remember where the other one is I may join them together. M.]

And why is anti-congestion legislation bad? Like many I guess posting here, I'm also a pedestrian, and dislike endless swarms of cars in narrow streets. It's time some thoughtless drivers were curtailled, merely because of pressures of numbers. When cars were less common, there wasn't a problem, but pedestrians aren't even safe to walk the pavement, due to the selfish behaviour of , I emphasise, a minority.

Has anyone been able to access the www.cclondon.com webpage (the official congestion charge web page)? I cant access it at all.

The site you want is www.congestion-charging.net I\'ve just purged the useful websites directory of the dodgy congestion charge sites and substituted this.

Personally the more I think about it the more I have sympathy wiht the idea. Although;

1) I would have made sure that there was sufficient carparking on the outside of the area affected.

2) Charged *loads* more than £5 or perhaps banned cars altogether. (£5 just isn't going to stop many people)

3) Brought in some exemption scheme for some circumstances - nurses is one commonly used as an example.

4) And I'd have made the affected area *loads* bigger.

I'd have a bit more sympathy if the govenrmaent hadn't spent the last five years implementing policies that would make congestion worse.
Turning existing road into bus lanes only make it worse. Especially if the bus companies don't put on more buses or change the timetables.
They are soon to get rid of double decker and replace them with double length bendy buses (twice the road space for the same amount of passenger capcacity.)

The bus lane on the utside of the M4.

ALL traffic calming schemes by definition reduce the capacity of the road in question.

Granting planning permission for even more offices in congested areas only stokes up demand for travel.

Fiddling with the timing of traffice lights (A bit insidious this one, because for several month they dismmissed the stories as anecdotal.)

Encouraging 'brown field' development will again create more demand for travelling.
Allowing the rail authorities to tackle overcrowding by increasing prices. By definition pricing people of trains MUST force them back onto the roads.

Massive reductions in speed limits on thousands of roads. Somerst alone plans to introduce 500 MORE 20 and 30 mph limits in the county between November 2002 and April 2003. Mostly on roads which have no measurable accident statistics.

Have you any idea how much extra revenue Gordon Brown gets if he can increase average journey times? It in the order of millions of pounds for every added second.

Mr cynical says, Red Ken is only interested in giving his customers good value for money. And if he's making you pay for congestion, he's doing his level best to make sure its the best possible congestion.

Depends on whether you assume that it will attratc inward migration or whether it gives people opportunity to live close to work e.g. where I work we restrict office dev in favour of retail and industrial but the resident population goes up to London to work in offices!

See above! Although having green belts is accepted to have a negative effect with regard to distance travelled

The only examples I can think of actually seem to show that congestion charging works e.g Copenhagen or Singapore. Are there any examples where this has failed spectacularly???

Thanks HJ, The site (www.cclondon.co.uk) is supposed to be the official site of TFL's congestion charges, if they can't even manage to get it running one can only imagine the mess they will create coming Feb 17th.

I have found a great site that provides unbiased details, the link is www.bbc.co.uk/london/congestion/
I hope it is useful to other members.

Try .com instead of .co.uk. That seems to work www.cclondon.com!

I wonder how robust Transport for London's computer system is?

Would it hold up to (say) one million people logging in at the same time?

I ask this as a purely academic wquestion, of course. ;-))
